Does Steve Smith own a violin? Has he ever heard the saying, “if you can’t take it, don’t dish it”?

How amusing this week has it been to watch the sulking of his team following the gobful he received from Virat Kohli?

The Australian cricket team taking a moral high ground on sledging, you can’t be serious?

The most loutish trash talkers in world sport are offended?

Let me remind you this mob has been compared to a pack of mongrels. They have a history of treating their opponents with contempt and now somebody is giving it back – and they don’t like it at all.

Mindless and hurtful sledging has no place in any sport, and Kohli isn’t exempt from this, but you can’t help but chuckle at the irony of Australia’s limp response – especially given Kohli’s remarks aren’t particularly offensive. He hasn’t threatened to break bones or labelled an opponent’s wife a curry muncher.

The relentless and deliberate sledging of Australia is a stain on the game. Perhaps the only way to humble Australia is to beat them at their own game. To conquer a bully, strike once and emphatically.

Even better Kohli can talk. His record against Australia is outstanding. In Tests he has made 1276 runs at 60.76 with six centuries, including five in Australia. In one day cricket he has scored 1002 runs at 55.66 and he averages 53.80 in Twenty20 fixtures. His taunts carry a little bit more weight than those of an average player.

The great entertainer Billy Joel ends every concert with a catchphrase, ‘don’t take s**t from anybody.’

Virat Kohli lives by this mantra. His superior batsmanship and refusal to tolerate crap is totally admirable.
