Reds hardman McMeniman out for six weeks

The Reds have received encouraging news on injured forward Hugh McMeniman, who’s now expected to be back for the second half of the Super 14 competition.

McMeniman broke his ankle in Friday night’s 23-18 loss to the Hurricanes in Wellington and it was initially thought he could out of action for six months if the injury turned out to be complicated.

An arthroscopy on the ankle yesterday showed only minor ligament damage and a fracture that was not especially serious, although McMeniman will still be sidelined for six weeks.

Coach Phil Mooney was delighted that Reds fans would get to see more of the hard running forward this season, although it was still disappointing for McMeniman to have suffered the break when he was playing so well.

“Hugh was pretty downcast when it happened, but hopefully the news that it’s not a six month injury will give him some encouragement,” Mooney said.

Scrumhalf Sam Cordingley, who was also injured in the Wellington match, will be out for 2-4 weeks with a groin strain.
