Penrith halfback Joe Williams has been granted an immediate release by the Panthers to play out the remainder of 2008 with NRL rivals the Bulldogs.
The former South Sydney No.7 moved to Penrith this year but has struggled to crack first grade, with coach Matt Elliott preferring Jarrod Sammut and Luke Lewis at halfback.
“I was just pretty much searching for an opportunity and I’ve signed with the Bulldogs,” Williams told AAP.
“I had a bit of a chat with the coaching staff at the Panthers and … I was sitting behind a couple of blokes there.
“I’m thankful that they’ve let me go and not been selfish about it and just leave me there in reserve grade.
“Hopefully I can go over there with a bit of a fresh start and an open mind at the Bulldogs to rip in and see what comes about.”
Williams will train with the Dogs tomorrow night and line up for them in the NSW Cup on Saturday, ironically against the Penrith feeder club he has been playing for, Windsor.
“They’ve got two established halves there (at the Bulldogs) … it’s never been handed out on a platter so I don’t expect it to start now,” he said of his chances of making first grade with his new club.
Williams’ chances of extending his deal at the Dogs beyond 2008 could depend on whether the club snares Cronulla halfback Brett Kimmorley for 2009.
