Brisbane ground out a much needed 18-12 NRL win over Cronulla at Suncorp Stadium tonight.

Broncos utility Greg Eastwood scored the match-winning try in the 72nd minute to put the game out of the fast finishing Sharks reach.

Tries to Sharks fullback Brett Kearney (64th minute) and Grant Millington had levelled the scores at 12-all.
Cronulla’s chance of snatching a win slipped when centre David Simmons was penalised for hitting Brisbane winger Kaine Manihera as he was still in the air fielding a bomb.

It was an unhappy night for the Sharks with utility Greg Bird failing in a late bid to play and captain Paul Gallen placed on report by referee Shayne Hayne for a tackle on Brisbane’s David Stagg in the 54th minute.

Gallen, who was suspended earlier in the season and reported last week for a high tackle against the Knights, took Stagg head-on but appeared to collect him in the head.

Brisbane led 8-0 after a defence dominated first half after Denan Kemp grabbed his 13th try of the season off an Eastwood chip kick to his right wing.

The Broncos slipped out to a 14-0 lead after forward Sam Thaiday crossed when hooker Michael Ennis managed to squeeze a pass out close to the Sharks try line.

Gallen described his front-on tackle which left Stagg dazed as a “total accident”.

“There was three or four Brisbane players who said it to me at the time, including Karmichael Hunt,” Gallen said.
