Referee Matt Goddard issued three yellow cards in the first 45 minutes of the Hurricanes versus Bulls game. Each card was for cynical infringements at the breakdown.

The early cards resulted in a much more open game between two teams keen to attack from deep.

Another yellow card for even more cynical and illegal rucking by Eaton followed in the 51st minute, and despite a 10-3 penalty count against them at the time, (13-3 at full time) the Hurricanes still just didn’t get it.

The game continued at a frenetic pace, end to end, until JP Nel went over in the corner after multiple, fast phase, complete rugby.

The Bulls stopped Nonu in midfield all night and this, with some kicking for field position, took the sting out of the potent Hurricanes attack.

With the breakdown finally behaving itself, the Bulls almost scored again in the 65th minute.

But congratulations must go to Goddard for ensuring that this showcase game was able to achieve its potential.

Rugby attackers often struggle to find space due to slow ruck ball and too many defenders in the line. Last night’s yellow cards solved both problems and the better team won.

Long may both continue.
