David Hussey has blasted a career-best 88 not out to guide Australia to 7-166 in their Twenty20 International against South Africa in Johannesburg.

Hussey’s maiden half-century in his sixth T20 International came off 31 deliveries.

The Victorian right-hander hit a total of five fours and six sixes from 44 balls.

Hussey, who batted at No.4 and came in during the fourth over, was almost run out for four, diving to just make his ground before a direct hit shattered the stumps.

Sent in to bat, Australia started slowly and Michael Clarke (2) was bowled by teenager Wayne Parnell as he aimed a mighty lofted drive in the second over at the Wanderers ground before a noisy crowd.

Skipper Ricky Ponting (1) was caught at long-off in the fourth over bowled by Albie Morkel.

Opener David Warner hit a brisk 38 from 29 balls before he became one of three wickets to fall in the 10th over.

Hussey’s elder Mike was run out for a first-ball duck, when batting with his sibling.

Brad Haddin (0) was caught at long-off four balls later as spinner Robin Peterson claimed his second victim with Australia struggling at 5-71 off 10 overs.

Peterson’s 3-30 included having Cameron White caught on the boundary for 16, ending a 45-run partnership for the sixth wicket with David Hussey in six overs.

Hussey also added 33 for the seventh wicket with Mitch Johnson (10).

South Africa will also host Australia for a second T20 match at Centurion on Sunday followed by a five-match series of one-day internationals.
