We’ve seen all the qualifiers. We’ve heard all the shouting. We have exactly one year until kick-off in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. So here’s the challenge: pick a squad of 23 players.
The starting eleven has to be in Pim’s preferred 4-2-3-1. The remaining twelve may have a touch more flexibility, but must heed Pim’s general view that there needs to be an understudy for each position.
For mine (and with respect, but no charity for Moore, Chippers, Li’l Macca and Dukes):
MILLSTERS XI
Schwartzer (GK), Wilkshire (RB), Neill (CB), North (CB), Carney (LB), Grella (CM), Culina (CM), Emerton (RM), Cahill (CAM), Kewell (LM), Kennedy (FW)
Bench:Federici, Spiranovic, Williams, Milligan, Coyne, Bresciano, Valeri, Carle, Garcia, Vidosic, Djite, Troisi

Looking at Millster’s selections specifically.
1. I think you have cheated by only including one keeper amongst your bench of 12.
2. North is not tested against seriously good NTs – it’s speculative to suggest that he is a walk up start to partner Neill.
3. Carney has not shown nearly enough to suggest he can be part of a back four.
4. I like having both Wilkshire and Emo on the right, and especially like the fact that they’re completely interchangeable.
5. The pairing of Grella/Culina pretty much picks itself.
6. The 2nd coming of Christ doesn’t appear to have the capacity to walk on water.

leave bresciano on the bench??
Look pim has made it quite clear he is willing to use better players totally out of position (Culina playing right back against qatar) or not so fit players( Chipperfield against qatar) rather than a specialist but not so good of a player ( ie a Steffanuto/Williams)
Therefore it
Schwarzer
Emerton – Neill – Moore – Chipperfield
Culina Grella
Bresciano Cahill Kewell
Striker
The only position is the striker thats up for grabs. I guess the one with the better form at the time will get picked. The rest i think if fit a lock to start.

If we are to play with Pim’s preferred system..
Starting XI
Schwarzer
Wilkshire, Neill, Moore, Chipperfield
Grella, Culina
Emerton, Cahill, Kewell
Kennedy
Subs
Federici, Jones, North, Milligan, Coyne, Carney, Sterjovski, Bresciano,
Valeri , Garcia, McDonald, Viduka [if fit + committed] or Djite.
1. I don’t think Australia needs to select too many central defenders. Coyne could be substituted for
Spiranovic if he is not going to get a lot of match time.
2. Valeri is a ready-made replacement for an ageing Grella in 2014, and must be a part of the squad.
3. Nick Carle could replace Garcia, however I don’t see why Garcia
[a player regularly starting in the EPL] should be overlooked.
4. I don’t think Scott McDonald should start as a lone striker.

To me Jesus doesn’t look up to it. If Dukes plays I agree with nearly everyone
Schwarzer
Wilkshire-Moore/Spiro-Neill-Chippers
Grella-Culina
Kewell-Cahill-Emo
Dukes
If he doesn’t than I dont think Jesus is up for it and we need to look at
Schwarzer
Wilkshire-Spiro-Neill-Chippers
Emo-Grella-Culina
Cahill-McDonald-Kewell
The idea would be to push back the Emerton/Bresciano type whilst allowing either Kewell or Cahill to play just behind the front striker and give Macca the support he seems to need. At the very last some sort of plan with two strikers is surely needed when we are chasing goals like against Japan last time
