![The depth and breadth of our sporting landscape never ceases to amaze me. On Saturday alone you could have watched Ashes cricket, NRL, AFL, A-League, Tri-Nations, V8 Supercars and the like on the box. With codes undertaking one of the most aggressive expansion phases in Australian sporting history, can this be sustained?
It is a fascinating [...] Adrian Musolino: Is Australia’s sporting landscape too overcrowded?](http://www.theroar.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/is-australias-overcrowded-th.jpg)
![The most important part of any season is getting into a position to play finals, and hopefully grab that double chance. During my time at Hawthorn, we were very fortunate to play in thirteen consecutive finals series (1982-94), including seven straight Grand Finals (1983-89).
Usually a month out from September you would know that you’re [...] Robert DiPierdomenico: In finals footy, the players must do everything right](http://www.theroar.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/in-finals-footy-hawthorn-th.jpg)
![Plenty of well wishers have dropped me a line recently in light of a fairly startling turn of events. For the first time this season, Shimizu S-Pulse have moved to the top of the J. League standings.
That the provincial outfit should currently find themselves on top of the standings is of itself no great surprise.

![You might not have felt it, but there was a definite shift in the AFL this week. It might have been a minor one, but it was unquestionably there: the beginning of the end for what is known as the outside player. The omission of Nick Stevens rammed it home.
Stevens had, of course, put in [...] Paddy Higgs: No place for one dimensional players in the AFL](http://www.theroar.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/no-place-afl-nick-stevens-th.jpg)
![A bright vision for the future or a nightmare wanting to be avoided at all costs? That is the question over the “Double Try” innovation which awaits rugby league at the inaugural NRL and Indigenous All-Stars match on the Gold Coast in February.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that someone has either been watching way too [...] Steve Kaless: A double try or just double trouble?](http://www.theroar.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/its-storm-eels-jeff-lima-th.jpg)
![The spectre of international cricket schedules has raised its ugly head again in recent weeks, not just because of, but certainly highlighted by, Australia’s suddenly chronic injury toll.
Fresh from losing several key players during the Ashes tour and Champions Trophy series in South Africa, five more Australian players have succumbed to injury during the current [...] Brett McKay: Dodgy cricket schedule, more headaches for players](http://www.theroar.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/dodgy-cricket-schedule-moises-henriques-th.jpg)
![Saturday’s AFL Grand Final loss is a bitter pill to swallow for the St Kilda Footy Club after such a tight contest, but as reflected by Saints skipper Nick Riewoldt in his post-match captain’s speech, it’ll be the source of great motivation to go one better in 2010.
Speaking on Sunday, beyond the immediate emotion of [...] Ben Somerford: Can the Saints get their own redemption in 2010?](http://www.theroar.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/can-saints-redemption-2010-Riewoldt-th.jpg)

In many ways, he’s the forgotten piece of the ever-growing puzzle that is the Australian fast-bowling attack.
