The Melbourne Heart name saga rolls on

Enough is enough. It’s time for the FFA and Melbourne Heart chief executive Scott Munn and chairman Peter Sidwell to bite the bullet, ignore the competition to name the club being run in the Herald Sun, and keep the working title of Melbourne’s second A-League franchise.
In case you haven’t been following the saga of deciding the name of the club, the Heart – the name of the franchise holders, Melbourne Heart Syndicate – are floating four nominations for its name in a poll run through the Herald Sun newspaper, over a year since the franchise was given exclusive negotiating rights for the 11th slot in the A-League and five months after they were officially awarded the license.
It is this delay that makes this competition futile, but more of that later.
The four options short-listed by the franchise include the working title of Heart and three other choices. They are as follows:
- Melbourne Heart FC
- Sporting Melbourne FC
- Melburnians
- Melbourne Revolution
Revolution is the most interesting candidate, in my opinion.
While many would rule the name out as yet another Americanised intangible name, some have pondered if Revolution does have some context considering its intimation to the Eureka Stockade, the closest Australia has come to revolution.
The Eureka rebellion has strong cultural and historical ties to Melbourne, and although the Southern Cross flag is often used as a symbol of protest, the meaning of Eureka has strong political and cultural connotations.
Whether such an idea would get past the FFA – who, let’s not forget, banned Melbourne Victory fans from bringing Eureka flags to matches before backflipping on that decision – seems doubtful.
If Revolution is selected and there is not some sort of link to Eureka, then it seems like a wasted opportunity to immediately inject some culture and meaning to the club, not to mention try and nab some supporters from the Victory, perhaps.
Melburnians has an interesting ring to it but seems a tad vague, while Sporting appears to be growing in favour as a tribute to Melbourne’s rich and varied sporting tastes.
But it seems to me this is a void debate, sadly.
The fact remains that according to the public the second Melbourne A-League franchise IS called Heart.
It’s too late now to move away from that.
When Mark Viduka has been linked with a possible return home it has been with the Heart. When they signed John van’t Schip it was as head coach of the Melbourne Heart team.
All the public awareness of the franchise is with Heart, and a new franchise can’t afford to lose that recognition and brand awareness when it is still in such an embryonic stage.
If Sporting wins out, for example, will people refer to the club as: “Sporting Melbourne FC, the club formerly known as Melbourne Heart?” I fear so.
This will be a branding disaster; not good for a franchise that is moving into a town alongside the most successful A-League franchise, without having any geographical or cultural – as yet – differentiation.
It’s a shame the FFA and the franchise waited and squabbled for so long on a name. Taking such a vote to the public is a great way to engage and build a fanbase, but more damage would be done in awareness for the club if they moved away from the Heart name.
Let’s hope commonsense wins out and they stick with Heart.

Is there some sort of competetion in the A-League to out do each other with stupid team mates? I follow sports from all around the world and the A-League has far and away the stupidist names in world sports as far as i can tell. All four of those options are horrible but in a league that already has a Fury, a Roar and a Glory i guess Heart is just par for the course

Mr Sports have a look at the US (MLS), Japan (J-League) & Korea (K-League) on which the A-league sort of models themselves on beoing newer competitions for more stupid names.

Now I am not a soccer fan, but I do keep an eye on the running of the A-League and some of it just seems stupid. I mean every press release so far has had the name Heart on it, why waste all that PR?
The A-League seems to me to be torn in two, will it a European style league with teams called “United” or “Rovers” or will it be an Americanised franchisey league (which I suppose it technically is) with teams like “Roar” and “Pheonix”. Will it be a “Soccer” league or a “Association Football” league?
This question needs to be answered overtime and I certainly cant do it. What I can do is tell you people I think “Sporting Heart FC” would be a terrific name. Not only does it have the same cogitations as “Sporting FC” in terms of Melbourne being a sporting capital but it also sounds classy whilst allowing the club nickname of “Heart” to stay.
Possible jersey colour schemes? Maybe an amalgamation of NSL/VPL jersey schemes (I understand this would be difficult) or more ideally just the classic Victoria blue/white done in Hoops with a touch of red (red is the colour associated with the heart after all).
Guys I think this team would be really successful if they tried to mimic or create a culture like the classic soccer clubs rather than being a team that looks completely packaged by modern marketers. Best of luck to you and your sport.

in addition to milicic’s work with the young roos, olsen’s also been working with a youth academy of recent times. so signs of an intention and ability to give a decent go to youngsters.

Pretty stupid wanting the club to take the image and symbolsim of the Eureka flag and stockade that VIctory supporters have already appropriated for themselves Adrian. How are they going to market themselves as a different experience to the Victory when everything about them from franchise structure to the flags in the crowd is exactly the same.
The name Revolution is ridiculous for a number of reasons. Melbourne, nor Victoria has ever had a revolution, so it want be like New England Revolution and have some meaning that way. The club itself will not be revolutionary in anyway, it will not be allowed to be, it still falls under the same strict FFA franchise structure and rules as every other A-League club. And as mentioned above, the one hint of ‘revolutionary’ aspect you brought up has alreasy been used by Victory fans in their anti-FFA & Docklands protests.
Hearts makes sense as the name, if only because that is what it has been known as for so long, but Sporting Melbourne, followed by Melburnians are the best names in my opinion. I expect they’ll either stick with Heart or go with Sporting. Imagine that though, in a league that’s supposed to have no ‘ethnic ties’ we could have two Scottish based clubs in the one city. Surreal……

Isnt the name some kind of rip-off of that Scottish club which is actually called Heart of Middle-Earth F.C. So in that case shouldnt this club also be called something similar, for example Heart of Tullamarine F.C.
