When the Wellington Phoenix announced the signing of Socceroo Jade North on Friday it prompted some fierce debate on A-League forums about just who has the strongest squad on paper going into the new campaign.
It’s a roundabout argument which reaches no conclusion. It’s purely subjective after all.
But the debate is great to hear with less than week before the new season kicks off. It seems we’ve got another even comp!
The likes of Wellington, Perth Glory, Melbourne Heart and Gold Coast United boast strong squads, while there’s the usual suspects of Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory.
But it’s all too easy to get carried away with a squad on paper. They’ve actually got to know how to deliver with results.
It’s an interesting point to ponder that four of the five A-League championships so far have been won by the two clubs from the big cities.
Sure, Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory have probably had more resources at their disposal, but as clubs, they have delivered on the field where it counts.
But the current off-season hasn’t gone so swimmingly for either of last season’s Grand Finalists, which may have offered the chasing pack a chance to catch up.
Sydney FC have had to replace much of their spine from last season’s double-winning squad following the departures of Clint Bolton, Simon Colosimo and Steve Corica. Socceroo Nick Carle has arrived to replace Corica, but he’ll need time to settle into his influential role.
Meanwhile, injury means Melbourne have lost iconic striker Archie Thompson – who’s so adept to their style of play – until November, while Victory stalwart Kevin Muscat took his time to decide to continue on but he will at the ripe old age of 37-years-young.
And coincidentally both clubs have been in the market for a striker, yet both have searched fruitlessly.
Indeed, on paper the recruitment efforts of both sides has been a tad underwhelming, but under Vitezslav Lavicka and Ernie Merrick they can stick with what’s worked before.
Looking on paper elsewhere, Wellington appear stronger, especially if their All Whites contingent are feeling confident following the World Cup, while Gold Coast should be better for having a season together and will be boosted by Shane Smeltz’s surprising return from China.
Perth Glory have added international marquee Robbie Fowler, who could be the final piece of Sage’s puzzle, while newboys Melbourne Heart appear to have a nice mix of experience, youth and foreign talent in their squad, but may need some time together to really find their groove.
Following on from Lavicka’s success last term, Adelaide United and North Queensland have opted for foreign bosses to lead them towards the finals but it’s hard to make a genuine case for them.
Brisbane, Newcastle and Central Coast have all been busy making wholesale player changes in the off-season and it’s hard to know what to expect from them.
It’s also hard to know what to expect from the new A-League season as a whole.
Last season’s top two will stick with what’s worked but don’t appear stronger on paper, while their main challengers will also stick with what’s worked but they’ve added quality to that. And then there’s the Gold Coast and the Heart who could be anything if it all clicks.
So who is your pick for the A-League title?

The phoenix are going to give this years comp a real shake up … North is a fantastic signing – but so is MacAllister … throw in Ifill and retaining the core of last years team – Wellington could go all the way or at least a GF appearance ….

Looking forward with great anticipation to this season…finally in Melbourne we can watch football in a ‘real’ football stadium…just hope MV find out quickly where the goals are located!
In terms of the final table l will stick my head out early and suggest the following in order from 1st to wooden spoon;
1. SFC (as much as it pains me they have done very well in the per season)
2. Phoenix (were good last year and one game from the final…now have strengtenthened the squad)
3. Perth Glory (have an excellent squad but seem to suffer on their travels…if they can overcome the travel issue)
4 MV ( have been weakened by significant injuries and havent bolstered the attacking options)
5. Heart (expect to start slow but have the quality to bring it teogether later on).
6. Gold Coast United (with Smeltz back they have a decent squad)
7. CCM (have a new coach and plenty of decent signings)
8. Newcastle Jets (could easily make the finals but will depend upon how many injuries the squad sustains…they seem to suffer more than most in that area)
9 Adelaide United (still not enough quality or goals in the squad)
10. Brisbane Roar (have a new team and have lost significant players…have they recruited well enough?)
11. NQF (will be difficult to beat in Townsville and l hope l’m wrong about this…dont seem to have the quality at this stage)

Phoenix look the team to beat for my mind with the boys from Perth to be the other contenders.
However it is pure speculation thus far for the success of each team hinges on the form of individual players. An example is the way Adelaide finished last season and went in the ACL will the addition of just one player, Flores. Anything can happen and that’s one of the things that keeps bringing us back.

Sydney FC – could they go back-to-back? Looks like it.
Wellington – World Cup euphoria and an even stronger squad.
Perth Glory – can they build on last season?
Melbourne Heart – a strong squad with youth and experience.
Gold Coast United – if Smeltz stays, they will go gangbusters.
Melbourne Victory – ageing players and Archie Thompson out.
Newcastle Jets – inconsistent.
Mariners – Arnold. Enough said.
Brisbane Roar – the club needs time.
Adelaide United – ward of the FFA, dysfunctional club with a loyal but dysfunctional fanbase.
North Queensland Fury – a miracle is needed.

I’d rather suggest you do. You’ve taken the time to search the site, read the article, found yourself compelled to answer and have spent time trying get a rise out of the fanbase so you have an excuse to revisit.
Time to man up and admit it; you’re in love with the A-League.

Who cares about AFL by world standards?
PS as a Sydney fan, I think Sydney have a very good chance of going back to back.
But some very strong teams across the board makes it really hard to pick, all makes for an exciting season!

Anyone who was at Suncorp and saw Brisbane’s new passing game in action against Everton would be very reluctant to have them near the bottom of the table, especially if this new Costa Rican is what he is reputed to be.
It’s an impossible season to pick. We have effectively 3 new teams (rather than clubs) – the Heart, Brisbane and Nth Qld, plus a significantly rebuilt Newcastle and Central Coast. Then you have to add in new, well credentialled coaches at Adelaide and Nth Qld.
Gold Coast and Melbourne Victory have barely changed. Virtually zero recruiting.
The only thing feel confident in predicting is that Sydney, Phoenix, Perth and Gold Coast will take 4 of the top 6 places, though I’m not game to suggest in what order while admitting I lean towards the Phoenix as minor premiers. For the other 2 places, it’s anyone’s guess. My hunch, having seen Brisbane against Everton, is that the Roar are going to be the surprise packet of the season.
Most likely implosion? Gold Coast, without a doubt. Too many egos, off field pressures and Bleiberg’s lack of quality as a coach make up a potentially toxic cocktail. I would not be surprised if this proves to be Gold Coast’s last season in the A League, simply because they have done little to repair their appalling image with their local community, the same people are still in charge, and just days ago Bleiberg was calling on Gold Coast fans to prove they deserved a team. The club has clearly learned nothing from last season. Expect them to average 4000 this season, which will almost certainly lead to Palmer pulling the plug.
And the team most likely to fall from grace? Melbourne Victory, without a doubt. Merrick needed to rebuild the team two years ago, while it was on top. Now he has a team with several key players in conspicuous decline, and Kruse and Duganzic are runners, not finishers. I will make the bold prediction that they will fail to make the 6 and Heart will.

If Perth had a good coach i’d say them, however they dont so i’d say the Nix will prob be the favorites if they can manage to get the finals matches at home i dont see anyone beating them. Heart will suprise everyone and GCU will probably do well this season now that they have had some time to gel.
MV will struggle if they dont find a striker PLZ SIGN SOMEONE GOOD! not another Mrdja!
Sydney will do well however they wont win simple as that
Jets will finish 5th
NQF will prob struggle
AUFC will end up just making or missing finals
CCM will see with Arnoald

Can hardly wait …
All teams are much stronger .. most have recruited well… some new coaches…. SBS to Monday night and hopefully a change in presentation… i.e. support for the A-League…
Many players from South America … cong’s to MV they have showed first with Fred and then with Hendo what a good number 10 can do… will be the year of the 10′s as someone said on another thread..
To me the team to beat is SFC … they are strong all over the park…..have speed, skill, a proven coach, and the Rovers coming next year they will want to capture a greater following before the Rovers arrive…
Watch for my Mariners …. they could be the long shot …
Predication from the Midfielder.. this will be the most successful A-League season ever and I make this prediction NOW … crowds to average over 12 K…
The thing that makes me happy about my Mariners is we have depth all over the park … when I look at the Hearts I see a great first 11 … but after that HMMMMMm……
Other prediction Fridays Headlines depending who wins this Thursday…
Mariners Win …. Mariners break Melbourne’s Hearts…
Hearts Win… Melbourne doug deep and played with Heart …
Draw …. Lucky Mariners get away with a draw Melbourne who played with Heart &; Pride.

1st – Perth Glory (gained many good players and will be the team to beat this season)
2nd – Gold Coast United (gained the likes of All Whites goalkeeper Glen Moss and former Man Utd defender)
3rd – Melbourne Heart (a team of champions or a champion team, we will see?)
4th – Melbourne Victory (a good team but with Kevin Muscat’s old age and losing Archie Thompson to injury they will struggle)
5th – Wellington Phoenix (All Whites squad with some good international talent)
6th – Brisbane Roar (young squad, but look at the Roar v Everton game, they diserved to win it and that’s coming from a GC United supporter
7th – Sydney F.C. ( lost too many players including the likes of Clint Bolton, Steve Corica, Simon Colosimo, John Aloisi and havn’t really gained anyone at the same level.
8th – Central Coast Mariners (Graham Arnold will help them with the title race and they will be no easy beat)
9th – Adelaide United (signed some good players however will take time to settle)
10 – Newcastle Jets (one word – INCONSISTENT)
11 – North Queensland Fury (lost too many players and the club as a whole will not function properly)
The race for the title will be close however Fury and the Jets are two inconsistent teams.
