Finally! After 24 weeks of football the AFL finals series will begin this weekend. The AFL needs a bit of excitement this September to spice up a largely dull and predictable year. There, I said it.
This has not been an AFL season for the ages. The AFL needs a classic finals series to rescue a predictable 2011 season.
Collingwood, Geelong, Carlton and Hawthorn have been entrenched at the top of the ladder since very early in the season.
There was only one change to the top eight since the halfway mark of the season, with St Kilda making a late season charge into the finals at the expense of Fremantle.
The AFL season so far has resembled a protracted foreplay session, in which the main protagonists have been kept just far enough apart to prevent any meaningful interplay.
The public has been forced to compare the merits of the best sides in the league not by how they go head-to-head, but instead by the size of the floggings they dished out to Gold Coast, Port Adelaide, Melbourne et al.
You can jibber on all you want about the rise of West Coast, the fall of the Bulldogs and the promise of the Gold Coast, but these minor points only mask the truth.
There have been too many one-sided matches, too many meaningless games and not enough interesting storylines to make 2011 a classic year – until now.
Thankfully, mercifully, that’s come to an end.
It’s time to get it on.
So what surprises and excitement might the finals throw up? Here are a few things which will help bring the 2011 AFL finals series to life.
Key forward kicking a big bag of goals in the Grand Final
It’s been a long time since a key forward kicked a memorable bag of goals in the Grand Final. Sure, Mooney kicked five for Geelong in the 2007 Grand Final, and Akermanis five in 2003, but they weren’t memorable performances in the mould of Ablett’s nine goals in the 1989 Grand Final.
What this finals series needs is for a player to kick a big bag of goals in the big one. Think eight, nine, or (dare we dream it) ten.
The most likely candidates are Travis Cloke from Collingwood and Hawthorn’s Lance “Buddy” Franklin. After a quiet Grand Final in 2008, if the Hawks make it to the big dance this year I expect Buddy to have a big day out.
Excitement factor: high Likelihood: moderate
Team outside the top four making it deep into the finals
History says it can’t be done. No side has made the Grand Final from outside the top four since Carlton in 1999, and no side has won the premiership from outside the top four since Adelaide in 1998.
Could this year be different?
Of those teams outside the top four, St Kilda and Carlton look the most likely to make a genuine push deep into the finals. St Kilda has had a very strong past ten weeks, and will worry the top four sides should they get over Sydney on Saturday night.
Excitement factor: moderate Likelihood: moderate
Bring back the Biff
The surest way to spice up the finals is for a bit of biff, preferably at quarter or half time to ensure maximum mayhem. Most likely candidates? Carlton and Essendon are traditional rivals, so keep an eye on the elimination final this weekend.
If the Bombers make a play deep into September then a possible Hawks versus Bombers game may also bring out a few haymakers – these two teams have history.
Excitement factor: Extreme Likelihood: very low
Upsets, upsets, upsets
Nothing brings a finals series to life more than a few upsets. St Kilda defeating Geelong in the first week of the finals last year changed the face of the finals series, with Geelong and Collingwood facing off in a preliminary final, rather than the Grand Final which many tipped.
The first week of the finals throws up plenty of potential upset results. Was the heavy Collingwood loss to Geelong on Friday night just an aberration, or can West Coast topple the Mapgies on Saturday?
After a string of tight losses in recent encounters, can Hawthorn get the better of Geelong in what looms as the best match of the first week of the finals?
A few upset results this finals series will be sure to put an exclamation point on the 2011 AFL season.
Excitement factor: high Likelihood: moderate
Tips for first round of finals
Hawthorn by twelve points over Geelong
West Coast by one point over Collingwood
St Kilda by 20 points over Sydney
Carlton by 33 points over Essendon

Very much agree – I’ve been thinking it’s been a dismal season, with it being a one-horse race and blowout-results making the comp. look a bit of a farce.
Now all of sudden things look abit different, hopefully it’s not just a passing illusion ? – are Geelong really that good ? , what are Hawthorn capable of ?, can you totally write off the Saints?
Having said all this, deep down I still feel Collingwood will win the flag in a canter – I just hope for the games sake we get a great Grand Final

Agree it’s been a dull season. The Roar seems to have reflected it also. The number of times I’ve looked this season and seen zero comments next to articles has been noteworthy. No fault of anybody, seems there’s been very little of interest to write about.

Just indicates that the Roar is basically a Rugby Union site – not helped by B Grade analysis that the most exciting addition to the finals might be a bit of tedious Hawk/ Bombers push, shove and jumper punching. Actually quite a lot of good close football this season. Some dull blowouts yes – but three drawn matches from memory, a lot of fast open football and the best display of high marking for decade.

Have to admit, that friday night, when i like to watch the football, has on quite a few occasions this year, been very predictable, and not very exciting.
What has happened to Collingwod though !, have the Colliwobbles hit early, this season the GC Suns have lifted my footballing spirits, no idea how to play any sort of tempo football, but very exciting in patches to watch.

Friday night’s game is massive Hawthorn v Geelong – they are always great close games but this is one is set up to be a classic, the winner goes straight to the Prelim and it has to be said outright favourite for the premiership.

? well whats happened to pies then ?? – all that can be really said is the winner of Friday’s game is in with a chance.

At this point in time despite the meaningless of Round 24, Collingwood are behind Geelong with some injury concerns. They can’t erase 90 points due to disinterest and still claim outright premiership favouritism.
Things can change.

That’s bad news both from being in the stands on Friday night and as us Hawks will rely on precise kicking to beat Geelong.

Looking forward to the finals, as they say in the classics, the real season now begins.
One thing we have learned for sure: 24 rounds is too long, and I don’t think we will ever have that again.
If we can work towards getting the season down to about 20 rounds, I think that would be preferable.

Its rare enough for anyone to kick eight goals in a home and away game, let alone a grand final. Can’t see it happening this season.
‘Bring back the biff’ seems like a pretty stupid way to try and get some excitement in the finals. Can’t say that’s something I want to see. Will certainly make it less exciting if half a dozen players get suspended from the rest of the finals.

As usual Sydney seem to be flying under the radar. Surprising really as they have defeated both St Kilda and Geelong in recent weeks, and only lost to Collingwood by a goal when they last played. Seem to be in as good form as any of the other finalists.

The home and away season has had it’s moments – the Gold Coast Suns were surprisingly enjoyable to watch. But I agree that the preludes are over and that the real competition is about to begin. It should be a fabulous final series with the hated Collingwood there to be dethroned, greatness beckoning for the Cats, the possibility that Hawthorn could blow the whole thing apart, and redemption on the cards for the Saints. All the others except Essendon are in with a chance, the Swans being the smoky.
Things are about to move to a whole new level. This could be the best finals series ever.

It looks like the best 1st week finals line-up that we’ve seen for a long while. Something that we desperately need after a very uninspiring H&A season. All the matches have something about them.
Collingwood have injuries, a few players due to come back from long lay-offs and are coming off a 96 point loss and yet will start comfortable favourites against a red hot Eagles team who are coming off a 95 point win.
The Kennet curse is still haunting the hawks (they haven’t beaten the Cats since he claimed that the Hawks had a psychological edge over the Cats) but they’ve always been tight games and i expect no different with both sides firing.
The Saints and the Swans are two of the form teams in the comp. The Saints have won 8/10 and the Swans their last 3, including taking down both the Cats in Geelong and their next opponents as well. We know what we’ll get from this match. It will be tight, brutal, ugly and low-scoring but the winner won’t be decided until the final few minutes.
A few weeks ago I thought the Blues would blitz past the Bombers (if they even made the finals) but the Blues have just stumbled a little bit towards the end of the season and the Bombers have had 2 weeks to plan for this one. Kreuzer now looks like he’ll play which will be a huge boost for Carlton. Random piece of trivia: Every team (apart from GC and amazingly including Richmond) has won a final since the Blues last won one back in 2001.
