Sharks interested in signing Carney

Troubled five-eighth Todd Carney may be thrown an NRL lifeline by the Cronulla Sharks. It has been reported that the Sharks have shown interest in Carney, who was released by the Sydney Roosters last week, with Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan to meet with Carney’s manager David Riolo this week.

The Sharks are hoping their talismanic captain Paul Gallen may be able to play a mentoring role for Carney.

NRL clubs Penrith, Brisbane, Souths and North Queensland have ruled out signing the 25 year-old.

Carney is believed to prefer to stay in the NRL rather than seek a move to France with Les Catalans. The former Rooster would need the blessing of NRL chief executive David Gallop to play in the NRL next year if he found a new club.

Gallop told The Sydney Morning Herald last week: ”If another club looked to sign him, we would want to sit down with that club and Todd, and understand what their plans are to keep him out of the spotlight off the field.”

“That doesn’t necessarily mean alcohol bans, but it does mean coming up with a plan where he’s not going to make promises that he can’t keep, and bring attention to himself,” Gallop said.

“Given Todd’s history, and the steps we’ve taken in the past with him, it would be prudent for us to continue to be involved in any ongoing place he has in the game.”
