There are few football fans that aren’t watching when two of the big four meet in the Premiership, and this morning’s game between Arsenal and Manchester United should be no exception, as we get underway just after 03:00 EDT.
The honeymoon is over for Thierry Henry after a goal on debut in the F.A Cup was followed by coming off the bench in the Gunners’ disappointing loss at Swansea last week.
Arsenal have thrown away more points when in winning positions this season than any other team in the top flight and given their opponents today, we could easily see a come from behind victory for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men.
United rode the momentum of a buoyant victory of their rivals Manchester City in the cup to a 3-0 league win against Bolton Wanderers last time out, but a trip to London is never easy for the Red Devils.
They’ve only won once at the Emirates Stadium and twice at all Arsenal home games since the turn of the century, with a 4-2 victory at Highbury in 2004/05 and a 3-1 win a couple of seasons ago.
One could be forgiven for thinking they were watching an EPL Classic Match rather than live coverage with the return of Henry being complimented on the other sideline by the re-birth of Paul Scholes – United will certainly have missed his excellent passing and tenacity, though not so much his mistimed tackles.
If Arsenal want to keep touch with the top four, grabbing a win here is vital. They are ten points adrift of their arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur, 12 behind their opponents in this one and still five behind Chelsea, who are holding that fourth Champions League spot right now.
The last time these two sides met as we all remember, was that stunning 8-2 victory for United – and since that day, the rumblings about van Persie’s departure, Wenger’s future and a number of other factors at Arsenal Football Club have come to the fore.
Both teams need a win, but who wants it more? Join us just before 03:00 EDT for the line-ups and team news.

What a fantastic double header we had today, and just like a few months ago it’s the Manchester teams winning out over their North London rivals, albeit to a much more respectable scoreline than last time.
A few question marks will have to be asked of Wenger as to why he took off his best player, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and brought on Arshavin – especially when the latter was partly responsible for conceding the winner.
For United, Nani and Evra were unstoppable down the left, Valencia equally so on the right. The Arsenal wide men completely failed to deal with the threat from the outside and though young Yennaris did a much better job than Johan Djourou, it was still a pretty unimpressive display from the Arsenal defence as a whole.
So that’s that, and Arsenal’s top 4 bid looks shakier by the week. Join us later today for live blogs on the tennis, cycling and the NFL playoffs. Feel free to drop me a tweet @TheMattBungard and be sure to subscribe to our twitter feed @theRoarSports – thanks.

Blocked on the line by Evans!! Mertesacker headed it goalwards and Lindegaard was probably beaten, but Jonny Evans was on the line to get the block!!

Evra with a foul on Walcott and though the Frenchman has stayed down with a cut on his head, he has received a yellow card. Five minutes of added time just came up and Arsenal have a free kick..

AND IT’S WELBECK!!! UNITED LEAD AGAIN!!!
4:45am
Matt Bungard said | 4:45am | Report comment
That was AWFUL defending from Song and Arshavin. Valencia dribbled in from the right, Song moved out of his way completely and Arshavin sort of hurried around him like a terrier but never really tried to make a tackle. So in the end, Valencia laid it off to Welbeck who thumped it home from 10 yards to restore United’s lead!

Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has been superb today, feeds RVP whose finish is simply beautiful. He turns on an angle, gets the ball on that familiar left peg and the shot goes through the legs of Jonny Evans and beats the outstretched arm of Lindegaard before going in off the post. All square at the Emirates!!

Awkward moment here as Welbeck keep the ball in play near the byline as Szczesny came out to clear it – in the end it comes off the keeper and rolls towards goal but no United players were in the middle. Eventually it’s out for a corner so the Arsenal keeper can receive some treatment.

And it’s cleared off the line by Mertesacker!! I didn’t see the buildup because the tv was showing a replay of something else, but we came back to see Welbeck’s finish rolling towards the goal line past a despairing keeper only to see the lumbering 8 foot tall German slide back in the nick of the time to clear the ball to safety.

Matt Bungard said | 3:56am | Report comment
As is so often the case, an anti-climatic first half rescued by a late goal. Giggs is really turning back the years today with a masterful performance, popping up on either side of the field to create havoc for the Arsenal backline who simply can’t deal with the aerial ball. Oxlade-Chamberlain has been lively for the Gunners but nobody else is really doing much…and they’ll have to change something if they want to get back in this game. This game is practically begging for a Thierry Henry cameo and equaliser/winner.

Matt Bungard said | 3:51am | Report comment
What a great cross from Ryan Giggs. from the left hand side he dropped it right on the head of Valencia who headed home from close range! A deserved goal for United to take the lead as they’ve definitely been the better team – some question marks will be raised over Thomas Vermaelan, who made very little effort to try and win that header or at least pressure Valencia before he could knock it home. Sloppy stuff from the Belgian.
