Wallabies want to join with All Blacks for ANZAC Tour

Wallabies players have thrown their support behind a proposed Anzac tour of the northern hemisphere in 2015, to commemorate the centenary of Australian and New Zealand troops landing at Gallipoli.
ARU boss John O’Neill revealed on Wednesday his visions for a combined Wallabies-All Blacks team which he hopes could play the British and Irish Lions at Twickenham in three years time.
There was a buzz at Wallabies camp on Thursday following O’Neill’s comments, with the likes of winger Digby Ioane relishing the thought of lining up alongside Sonny Bill Williams, and halfback Will Genia excited by a prospect which could see him partner Dan Carter in the halves.
An Anzac team played against the Lions in 1989, but the concept failed due to a lack of support from players during the amateur era.
But several Wallabies expressed their desire to one day play in such a match and said Australian and New Zealand players would jump at the chance.
“Guys would look forward to that and aim to get into that team,” said Wallabies No.8 Wycliff Palu.
“A lot of people would like to watch it and guys would like to be a part of that squad, so it’d be good for rugby if it gets off the ground.”
Drew Mitchell, who is on track to return for the Wallabies during the Rugby Championship, said representing the Anzac tradition 100 years after Gallipoli would be an honour.
“It would mean a hell of a lot to all involved,” said Mitchell, who likes the idea of it being more than a one-off occurrence.
“It’s for people higher up the food chain than me to sort out whether it’s a year-in year-out thing or if it’s something like the Lions where it’s every four years and it’s a different country each time … but because there’s so much history between the two sides on the rugby field and off, it makes a fair bit of sense.
“You wouldn’t find too many hands not being put up for that selection.”

And now that McCaw is playing No. 8, they’ll be no argument over whether he or Pocock plays 7.

I’ll support it if the team is selected on merit not on evening out numbers to appease fans in both countries.
The British and Irish Lions select the best team available they do not use a quota system to keep the respective home unions happy.

I think QC, Beale and JOC would make the team although they may not start.

Why not a tour of the north by the best of the Rugby Championship every four years? Maybe they could be called the Sperm Whales or the Southern Fried Chickens.
Anyway, I like the Anzac idea.

Give it to JON, its a good idea, provided it is a one-off. The Lions are a touring team, so the Home Unions fans will jump at the chance to play a match at home. We don’t want to be doing this every 4 years, the schedule is crowded enough already.

Much has changed since 1989 – the Super Rugby comps have brought the players much closer together. The Baa Baas have made a comeback and again brought many international players together.
Again as an old digger, I would welcome the Anzacs as a celebration of a shared history. I believe that it would provide an opportunity for our two great nations to unite for a short period and cheer the best of what we have in Rugby.
Every 4 years would be good for me. It would be a merchandising goldmine.

I would have made space for them and even Quade however they are out injured long term so were not available.
Wouldn’t it be great to see the AB midifelders running off Quade Cooper or even McCaw and Pocock in Tandem it would be awesome to see Genia perfomr under a dominant pack – The possibilities are endless.
Jus for sheer excitement value I would like to see.
10. Cooper/O’connor
11 Kahui
12 SBW
13 Ma’a Nonu
14 Digby
15 Dagg

Why play the lions? Do what they do, turn up with half a dozen countries best players in tow and play a single nation. It used to work for them but recently it’s still not enough. Let’s go over there with a SANZAR squad & humiliate them country by country.

Great idea
Only issue is the lack of history (for the game, not the broader concept of the ANZACs of course) – the players need to play it the Lions rather than the Baa Baas – i.e. with heart/determination/etc – not focus on putting on a spectacle.
The lopsided nature of the games could also be an issue if the desire is there – ANZACs vs Lions would be interesting but ANZACs vs England or Wales or Ireland – wow, if they got within 30points it would be a good effort.

this is will only go as far as a Fantasy team.
Can’t see it happening. 2015 is also a long way. Dont think some of the current players will be around in 2015
