Cahill set to leave EPL for New York Red Bulls in MLS
Australian Tim Cahill is poised to join the Major League Soccer in the United States, with the New York Red Bulls and English Premier League club Everton agreeing on a fee for the midfielder.
“Everton have agreed with Major League Soccer (MLS) that Tim Cahill can be transferred to the New York Red Bulls,” a statement on the club’s official website said on Monday.
“Tim, 32, will move to the Red Bulls for a nominal fee, subject to agreeing personal terms and passing a medical. He will travel to the US in the next few days.”
Cahill joined Everton from Millwall in 2004, scoring 68 goals in 278 appearances.

What a great spell at Everton. Can’t help but think that he should be heading to an A League club though.

Tim to me has not been loyal to OZ to be honest. He is taking the big cash in the USA and not returning to the A-league. Kewell cam home to OZ for the better of the game to give something back to OZ football, so should Tim Cahiil. Where is the spirt of destiny 06 now Cahill, and giving your all for the green and gold and the jersey. Very disappointed in Tim, he is a hero was one of the faces of weet bix and one of our destiny 06 heroes. All that seems to of been forgotten as if it’s just a long time ago. I don’t know if i will say the world un Australian here with tim cahill’s desicion but ver very disappointed in destiny 06 hero Tim Cahill. Hiddink always used to say players must give back locally even at the sacrifice of money as it is good for grassroots football , i wonder what aussy guss hiddink as he is affectionately known. I wonder what the dutchman would be saying now too taking the money, and not staying local and coming back home.

A couple of things:
1) Personal terms have not been agreed, so saying he’s leaving for money could be way off the mark.
2) NY appear to have made an offer, not a case of Cahill agitating for a move, he’s taking an opportunity that was offered to him. If an A-League club had of had the wherewithal to make a similar offer, then he could of taken them up on it.

Why do you keep saying ‘destiny 06′? Makes you sound like some crumb in a nursing home, tapping away on a letter to the editor about some pointless local traffic issue.
Aside from that, I agree that a move to the A-League would have been more in line with Cahill’s character and passion for Australia. But can you begrudge him wanting to play a higher level Johnno? I mean the guy probably thought he had at least another season as an interchange player, and to be moved on must be somewhat hurtful to his pride. It makes sense for him to move somewhere like NYRB.
I can’t even imagine how much attention and fanfare he would have brought to the HAL if he came back, it would have been massive. Imagine that headline: ‘Cahill signs with WSW’. It would be a huge boost for every aspect of the game in Oz.
But, in reality, he has taken the best offer from a professional sense, so no need to go pulling out your comb-over Johnno.

TC is still a contracted Everton player and they are SELLING him. Reports from other websites are saying for about $1.6m. The plainly obvious thing here is that A-league clubs, while possibly able to pay his wage demands as a marquee, cannot affort to pay those sorts of transfer fees.
Possibly when his stint in the US is done he may move on a free transfer back but its a bit harsh to say he’s being disloyal. He’s been sold.

I’m disappointed he’s not coming back to the A-League, but the player ‘owes’ us nothing. Tim always put his hand up to play for the national team. This means he has no debt to the country IMO. It would have been nice, but the man has to look after himself and provide a future for his family; he’s coming towards the end of his career now. From the little I’ve seen on TV, MLS isn’t a noticeable level higher than our league, even so, it has less games, so hopefully Tim can stay matchfit(perhaps picking up his form – which had dropped at Everton last season) and still contribute to the Socceroos quest for Rio2014.

If you think MLS is obviously better than the A-League, I can only conclude that you have fallen victim to a severe case of cultural cringe. I have watched many games of MLS on ESPN and it is almost exactly on a par with our game. By virtue of the larger population in the USA, it is likely that they will have more money to pay big name players.

I’m not here to argue, but it is not on par, the speed of play, the physical nature of MLS is better. However the Technical ability is close, but that’s it. If you look at the players they buy and the players we buy, it is not even close. This is not even looking at the players from Europe, I’m talking about young south American Players. NYRB salary is above 20 million. Unlike our salary cap, you can go over it in MLS. We have a way to go, not a long way, but still some footsteps to go.

The other thing about finishing up your career is that you need to look after yourself financially because you only have a couple of years left to earn good money.
Harry only came back to the A-League because he got 99.99% of everything Victory earned last season – and that still wasn’t enough.
Can’t see Tim, Bresch, Vince, Lucas or the others coming back under current salary conditions.
Let’s hope the A-League can do without them anyway and look forward to watching players like Besart, Flores, Emerton and Brioch again this season.
Only 9 weeks and 5 days to go.

What was posted by a guy on the site, can you imagine this being said of an AFL person … Chris, I don’t know who your team is – probably Chicago based on your picture – but this isn’t anything but good news for MLS (and within league rules). Tim Cahill is a solid player and could easily find another team in Europe. His arrival will definitely be good publicity for the league and NYRB. And, by the way, even if they broke rules to get him, I’d be all for it. We need more WORLD stars in this league. Look at how much it changed when ONE (Beckham) came over. Now most teams have at least one legit star player. Don’t let rules hold back the greater good

Huh…???
Not being “good enough yet” to play professional sport is the very essence of “amateurish”!
From what I’ve been told, the level of ARF being played by GCS is about the same as VAFA or State League AFL, which is not surprising since most of those kids would have been playing VAFA or State League AFL if GCS did not exist.

Your knowledge of football is truly embarrassing.
In September 2006, Tim Cahill was nominated for the Ballon d’Or, which is the award for the best footballer in Europe – that’s how highly regarded he is as a player.
The biggest clubs in Europe wanted to sign Tim, but he remained loyal to Everton, who are the 4th most successful football club in England. Everton has won more English football titles than Man City, Chelsea, Spurs, etc.
Only Man United, Liverpool & Arsenal have won more English titles than Everton.
GCS, I appreciate you want to engage with a global sport – like football – but, may I suggest you stay silent and absorb information rather than exhibiting your football illiteracy.

I know more than you might think Fussball. He was one of 50 nominees. He had one good season I suppose. Good on him, nothing to be sneezed at. The biggest clubs didn’t want to sign him, Everton was as high as he was ever gonna get. Having said that, I like Cahill and would say that he made the most of his abilities.
You stating Everton’s titles is being disingenuous. The last one was 25 years ago, and you and I both know that they will probably never win another one. That era has gone.
Fussball – I engage with a lot of global sports. Like most Aussies, I am into a variety of sports. Not sure how long you have been in the country, but I’m not sure that you grasp that.

“If you saw the guy play the way he plays, I love the commitment and I always loved his commitment. He’s great in the box, his headers are unbelievable. He fights back to the net and his football brain is great also.”
