Australia’s Tim Cahill scored twice as New York Red Bulls dealt Seattle Sounders’ hopes of winning Major League Soccer’s Supporters’ Shield a blow with a 4-1 hammering.

Bradley Wright-Phillips also scored twice as New York won to keep themselves in the chase for direct qualification for the Eastern Conference semi-finals.

Clint Dempsey briefly cut the deficit to 3-1 but Cahill’s second rendered it irrelevant.

Los Angeles Galaxy took advantage of the result by beating FC Dallas 2-1 to go level on points with Seattle at the Western Conference summit.

The Galaxy trailed to Blas Perez’s goal but Robbie Keane quickly equalised and substitute Alan Gordon scored a late winner.

The Red Bulls are fourth in their conference, only a point behind New England Revolution which lost 1-0 to Columbus Crew as Federico Higuain scored the only goal.

The top three teams qualify directly for the conference semi-finals, with the next two playing off to join them.

Eastern leaders DC United were held 3-3 in Chicago Fire’s 16th draw of a curious season.

DC trailed 2-0 to Quincy Amarikwa’s goal and Jeff Larentowicz’s penalty, recovered to lead 3-2 through Luis Silva’s brace and Bobby Boswell’s goal but were pegged back by Matt Watson.

Fanendo Adi scored twice in the Portland Timbers’ 3-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps, Diego Valeri with the opener, while late goals from Jack McInerney and Dilly Duka gave Montreal Impact a 2-0 win over San Jose Earthquakes.

Philadelphia Union and Houston Dynamo drew 0-0.
