Will Hayne play wide out or left right out?

Many of us may have woken up this morning only to think “has Haynsey lost his mind”? “The NFL”?

While I applaud his move and think he’ll be liking his bum in lycra, it does beg the question, what position does he imagine he’ll be playing?

He is quick but he does not have NFL Corner Backs (CB) speed so he won’t be burning many starting CBs downfield if he thinks he is a Wide Receiver (WR). A slot receiver at best, however, those jobs are usually for aging vets.

He does not have the body to be a Tight End (TE), and blocking guys as big as Dave Taylor all day will not be his calling.

He has the feet to be a Running Back (RB), but is he too tall? Jarryd Hayne is 6″2 (189cm). The average height of an NFL running back is around 5″9.

Guys around that height like Frank Gore and Alfred Morris weave their way through linemen using their low center of gravity and their lack of height to their advantage.

The over 6ft crew including current stars Adrian Petersen and Arian Foster have had long high school, college and pro careers to get to the top of the heap. At age 26 has Jarryd left it too late?

A punter (P) surely not. While Aussie success stories Ben Graham and Sav Rocca have made their splash in the big pond, surely Haynesy isn’t going all that way to put up bombs is he?

A kick returner perhaps? This is the part of the game where a weaving Jarryd Hayne could see some game time. He has shown us this even without blocking he is an open field threat.

That just leaves defence. Which, let’s be honest, would be a waste of his tremendous offensive skills. If he wanted to tackle all day he could trade in his No. 1 jersey for a No. 13 and join the midfield wrestle.

It will however, be an interesting experiment. Should he succeed in a sport where the average salary, according to Forbes magazine is $1.9 million (US), how many other NRL players will start to think, I could play a 16 game season where the average actual playing time is a mere 11 minutes!

I think we could all see a player like Konrad Hurrell running in a few TDs couldn’t we?

No league fan can doubt the Hayne Plane has talent, and on behalf of all league fans I think it would be a thrill to see him score a touchdown in the Superbowl.

Parra will miss you. The blues will miss you. The kangaroos will miss you. Queensland will not miss you.

To the 30, to the 20, to the 10, touchdown Jarryd Hayne!

Good luck mate.
