MATCH RESULT:

After taking a 1-0 lead through Segio Aguero in the 63rd minute, it was a nervy last 15 minutes for the defending Champions, Manchester City as they held on to secure a 1-0 win against cross-town rivals Manchester United and snap a two game losing streak.

Both sides had their chances but City walk away deserved winners after having the better opportunities and ultimately playing a better brand of football.

United started strong, controlling possession early but when Chris Smalling was sent off after two stupid and somewhat idiotic bookings, it became increasingly challenging for Van Gaal’s men.

City dominated the immediate period after Smalling’s dismissal and should have had two penalties prior to half time but on both occasions referee Michael Oliver waved play on.

Toure’s appeared to be clear cut while replays indicated Ageuro’s claim should have been a penalty but Michael Oliver’s view of both claims may have been obstructed. Nonetheless, City should have gone into halftime with the lead.

The second half started the same way the first ended with City all over United coming close on a number of occasions as Toure, Aguero and Navas all had good chances. When City eventually took the lead it was well deserved and it came via a beautifully worked move as Toure, Clichy and Aguero all combined, with the latter burying his best opportunity of the game.

United threw caution to the wind after going one down and played there best football of the match in the last fifteen to twenty minutes with Rooney, Fellaini, Di Maria and Van Persie all having good chances.

Rooney was instrumental for United’s attempted comeback and came close after a brilliant run through the midfield which saw him beat four City defenders before going down in the box. Fellaini also squandered a brilliant opportunity to equalise after he failed to get any power behind a brilliant pin-point ball from Di Maria.

Di Maria had a chance of his own to level it up which forced a nice save from Hart but ultimately City hung on and prevailed with the win.

For United, it is their lowest point total through ten games in over 25 years and since the Premier League started.

United will take encouragement from their resilience finishing the game but once again, despite the influx of talent, United remain a mid table team.

For City – they put an end to a poor run of form and take bragging rights in the first Manchester Derby of the season. The win should give City the confidence to get back on track and challenge Chelsea at the top of the table.

FINAL SCORE:
Manchester City 1
Manchester United 0
