Hot on the heels of finishing third and qualifying for W-League finals, I got the chance to chat with Canberra United Striker Ash Sykes.

Sykes plays predominantly as a number 11 (left wing), and has scored four goals this season, including a goal of the year contender against Perth Glory in the last regular-season game.

Wayne: Can you describe the feeling after scoring that goal against Perth Glory?

Ash Sykes: Ecstatic. The team was under the pump, and getting that goal basically guaranteed the finals spot, even if Perth scored. Really, really happy.

The best compliment you have ever got?

Having the goal compared with Timmy Cahill’s goal at the World Cup.

How do you prepare for an away game?

The coaches keep preparation consistent for away games, fly up the day before, and keep the same room mates, pre-match meal with team. Consistent arrival time/preparation on match day for both home-and-away fixtures.

If you could change one rule about your sport, what would it be?

Probably how fouls are refereed around the penalty box. For the referees, they are more hesitant to call it in the box versus out in general play. More of an idea really.

What’s it like playing with your sister – and Canberra United captain – Nicole Begg each week?

Yeah, it’s good. We are on the same page for the most part, so can always talk about strategies and ideas. With this season especially, we have a good partnership and know each other’s games. Makes it fun.

Most embarrassing sporting moment?

Playing Sydney FC in an earlier season of W-League, Catlin Muñoz was one-on-one with goalkeeper and I was running for same ball and accidentally tripped her over. She got up to call for the penalty, before realising it was her own player that brought her down.

How do you cope with nerves?

I don’t really get nervous while playing, nervous before the game, during the warm up. Once out on the field, I feel fine.

Your greatest accomplishment as an athlete?

Playing for Australia at the Asian Cup this year [in Vietnam]. That was really special being involved in team that finished the tournament second.

What are your chances of making the Australian squad for World Cup next year?

I have been playing reasonably well this season, and standard in W-League as a whole has stepped up as girls are striving to get noticed. Hopeful of making the training squads, and you never know from there.

Finally Ash, what advice do you have for up and coming girls pushing for W-League selection next year?

Work hard. Work hard at training and developing skills, but always enjoy it.

Just wanted to thank Ash for her time, and also to Capital Football. Canberra United takes on Melbourne Victory this Saturday 13th December at Simmonds Stadium, Geelong for a place in the W-League grand final.
