Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz comes up against the ever-entertaining Frenchman Gael Monfils at the 2015 Australian Open this afternoon. Join The Roar for live scores of the match from around 5:30pm AEDT.

Janowicz must be thanking his lucky stars that Juan Martin Del Potro had to have wrist surgery, ruling him out of their scheduled opening-round clash on Tuesday. As a result he played Hiroki Moriya, who the world number 44 put away fairly comfortably, despite a lapse in concentration in the second set.

But his wasn’t the only lapse in focus in the first round, with volatile Frenchman Monfils also experiencing a downturn in form in the opening two sets of his match against Lucas Pouille.

Somehow, thanks largely to some ridiculous play in a couple of key points, managed to spark a comeback from two sets down to defeat his compatriot. This sets this up to be a mouthwatering clash.

Monfils is seeded 17th here, and is well known for oscillating wildly in form.

Janowicz is a strong player, and former world number 14, and at just 24 could be anything in his tennis career. Monfils is 28, and has never quite fulfilled the potential that everyone knows he has.

Both players swing for the fences from the baseline, and posses a ridiculous array of groundstroke weaponry. Add to that their booming serves, and this could be one of the highest quality matches of the tournament.

It could also be a match full of brain snaps and unfulfilled promise, depending on the headspace of both players.

Will Janowicz see this as an opportunity to cement his comeback into the Grand Slam seedings? Or will Monfils have steeled himself after losing the opening two sets of his 2015 Australian Open run.
