Stan Wawrinka continues his quest for back-to-back Australian Open crowns against Marius Copil on Day 4. Join The Roar for live scores from around 1:00pm (AEDT).
Both Wawrinka and Copil enter this second round match-up with strong first round wins under their belt.
Wawrinka accounted for Turkey’s number one ranked player, Marsel Ilhan, in three sets, dropping just seven games along the way. Copil on the other hand accounted for 28 year old Spaniard, Pablo Andujar, not doing things too much harder than Wawrinka, dropping just nine games in the three set match.
Copil enters this match as a big underdog, but if he can carry some of his opening round form into this match, he should be able to cause the reigning champ a few headaches.
The key for Copil will be applying pressure on his serve. He possesses a potent serve and it performed well for him against Andujar as he nailed 18 aces and won 70% of his first serve points.
The return of the man Copil faces today is far classier than in the opening round. That being said, if he can maintain a cool head on serve, he might be able to create a few openings in this match.
A win for Copil today would be to steal a set from the Swiss number two.
But Wawrinka really should not have much trouble accounting for the 24 year old Romanian. He entered the Australian Open in strong form after claiming the Chennai Open for a third consecutive year, and appeared completely on-song in the opening round.
Although Copil has a reliable serve to lean on, Wawrinka’s is stronger. Couple that with one of the best one-handed backhands on tour and it is hard to imagine any other result than a win for Wawrinka today.
Prediction: Wawrinka in straight sets.
