Adelaide Oval hosts what is effectively a play-off for a quarter-final berth in the 2015 World Cup. Both teams have a game to play after this with England to face Afghanistan, which should be a win, and Bangladesh facing New Zealand, which should be a lose. So the winner here will lock in a place in the quarter-finals.

Both teams have beaten Scotland, though drawing a line through this England were more impressive.

Unbelievably Bangladesh has beaten England in two of the last three meetings in ODI’S. However, this dates back to 2010 and 2011, so there is no recent form. Bangladesh beat England in Chittagong in the last World Cup and then also in 2010 at Bristol during a tour of the UK.

England’s hopes with getting a good score rest with Joe Root. He is the one class player in this line-up and has been a leading run scorer together with Moeen Ali. Ali, for all his frailties as a batsman, has scored against the lesser nations and has also been the best of a mediocre attack. His all round presence is a key to this game.

The English bowling has been deplorable, conceding more than six runs an over on average. Surely changes need to be made with Steven Finn being replaced by Chris Jordan or even the spin of James Tredwell.

Injuries have hit Bangladesh. Anamul Haque dislocated his shoulder in Nelson against Scotland and is out and captain Mashrafe Mortaza is hobbling like an old draught horse. He bravely leads the attack and has done well, but for how much longer can he hobble to the crease?

Shakib Al Hasan, the highly rated all-rounder, is showing what all the hype is about with even performances with both bat and ball. Mushfique, the keeper-batsman, has also been a revelation in the World Cup and provides a great finishing option in the middle order.

Prediction: Surely England can’t lose this one. I expect them to show Bangladesh who is boss and win with some conviction. Bangladesh’s bowling is weak and James Anderson and Stuart Broad have to hit their straps some time.

Will we see the biggest surprise of the 2015 Cricket World Cup or can England silence the laughter coming out of all Australian bars and offices and lock in a finals berth? Join me on The Roar from 2.15pm (AEDT) for the live blog and commentary.
