Carlton’s crisis will dominate the AFL again this week, with rival coach Alastair Clarkson bemoaning the instability at the club.
The widespread speculation is when, not if, the Blues will sack coach Mick Malthouse.
Saying it is not in his DNA to quit, Malthouse has made it clear several times that he will not stand down.
The situation at Carlton took another turn for the worse late last week, on and off the field.
First, Malthouse broke ranks with the club last Thursday when he said the message from the Carlton hierarchy about recruiting was affecting the players.
Blues chief executive Steven Trigg said Malthouse’s comments were surprising.
Last Friday night Geelong thrashed Carlton by 77 points, their fourth-straight loss.
They have another high-profile Friday night match this week and Sydney at the SCG will be a daunting assignment for the AFL’s bottom club.
On Sunday morning, Clarkson said the situation at Carlton was bad for everyone in the league.
“The thing we want to see with all our football clubs is that there’s some sort of stability and continuity,” Clarkson told the ABC’s Offsiders program.
“Even as an opposition … you don’t like seeing clubs go through (this).
“It’s not good for the competition, in a sense – the mid-season turmoil in particular.
“It disrupts other clubs, it disrupts the competition (and) you just hope something could be sorted out.
“It’s a real toxic and difficult environment.”
