Marin Cilic faces a tough match against Isner and will need to place his shots perfectly to open up the American’s weaknesses. Cilic is coming off a win in five sets over Ricardas Berankis however, if he is made to endure another five set match he could well be in a better position than Isner, who breezed through his previous round.

Isner still lacks a strong backhand and his movement remains weak. Cilic is known to target his opponents weaknesses and this could plot the American’s downfall. Isner must defend his line and try to take the game in as few sets as possible due to his poor fitness.

Cilic and Isner have met on four occasions, with Cilic having one all of their matches. Their most recent match-up was in Week 8 of 2014 in the semifinals of Delray Beach where Cilic won in straight sets 7-6, 6-3. Ninth seed Cilic has a win-loss record in his past ten matches of 7-3 and is coming off a five-set thriller against Ricardas Berankis 6-3, 4-6, 7-6, 4-6, 7-5. Isner is seeded 17 and holds the same record as Cilic, he is coming off a win over Australian Matthew Ebden in straight sets 6-2, 7-6, 6-4.
