The latest misdemeanour by Bernard Tomic, the hotel incident which resulted in him being arrested, is just another example of why Tomic desperately needs professional guidance and a support network.

It’s blatantly obvious that whatever measures he currently has in place are sadly lacking.

After Tomic blasted Tennis Australia at Wimbledon following his third round loss to Novak Djokovic you would have thought that he’d lay low for a while and take stock.

However, Tomic’s priorities were once again on himself while the Australian Davis Cup team was involved in a crucial quarter final tie against Kazakhstan.

As the highest-ranked Australian men’s tennis player, Tomic’s priorities should have been playing singles in the Davis Cup team and giving his all for his country.

At the very least, supporting his teammates from the sidelines would have sufficed – just ask Lleyton Hewitt.

It’s high time that tennis Australia took a hard-line stance against players such as Tomic and Kick Kyrigios rather than being treated with contempt and shown little or no respect.

What kind of example is Tomic setting to those aspiring to represent Australia one day in the Davis Cup?

For such a prodigiously talented player, it’s a real shame that he has to repeatedly tarnish the image and integrity of Australian tennis.

It can only be hoped that sometime soon the penny will finally drop for Tomic and that he’ll realise his full potential both on and off the court.

Until he does, his reputation will continue to be in tatters and his popularity among Australian tennis fans will remain at an all time low.
