Australian 22nd seed Samantha Stosur continues her quest to win a second US Open in a game she goes into as heavy favourite when she takes on Russian Evgeniya Rodina on the Louis Armstrong Court.

The US Open to date is of course the only grand slam Stosur has managed to win, however at the same time it has also set the scene for plenty of heartbreak for the 31 year old Australian. Apart from her win in 2011 and a quarter final appearance either side of that it has been all first and second round exits.

While this has not been true across all the grand slams, Stosur often is knocked out early and it will be playing on her mind coming into this match with the up and coming Rodina.

In the first round, Stosur was good enough to record a straight sets win over Timea Babos who is currently ranked 74th in the world. Coming into the tournament though, her form was incredibly worrying losing three straight matches against players who are ranked well below her.

Rodina meanwhile in the first round also had a very solid and convincing win over Tereza Mrdeza only dropping four games across the two sets. While Mrdeza was a qualifier for the tournament a win like that is always a confidence booster.

Like Stosur, Rodina has abysmal form leading into the tournament coming off three straight losses. For Rodina this is her third US Open after having two first round exits in both 2008 and 2011.

Another major roadblock for Stosur to progress to the third round of the US Open is the fact that the pair have never played each other. Looking at the WTA rankings and form you would tip Stosur in a canter every time, however there is an element of unknown about the contest.

Prediction: Given Stosur’s troubles trying to get out of the second round at the US Open and indeed all the grand slams it could be said that she might not win this one easily. However you would expect her to take it out, maybe after dropping a set.

Stosur in three sets.
