Match Result: The last Australian male is out of the singles at the US Open after Bernard Tomic lost to Richard Gasquet in the 3rd round.

GASQUET 6 6 6

TOMIC       4 3 1

To put it simply Tomic never recovered from his 2nd round match against Lleyton Hewitt.

He struggled early in the match and never recovered as his legs fell away in the final set and a half.

Gasquet punished this and dominated his opponent.

He lost just 8 points on his serve all match, and had 16 chances to break Tomic.

Five breaks of serve, including two in the final set, were enough for Gasquet to make the 4th round.

In the final set, Tomic could hardly move, as his mobility was limited to a couple of metres.

The first set was the closest between the two as Tomic served well to keep himself in the hunt.

Unfortunately loose games in all sets cost the Aussie dearly.

Could Tomic have done more if he was fit? That will be the question asked by many including his team.

Gasquet though did play well and hit plenty of winners. He is a player who is finding his form at the right time of the event.

He will be hard to beat now.

Match Preview: Can Bernard Tomic find enough energy in the tank to defeat Richard Gasquet and make the fourth round of a Grand Slam for just the fifth time in his career? Find out as The Roar live blogs his match from 1am AEST.

After surviving an epic five set battle with Lleyton Hewitt in the second round, which saw the South Australian come back from two sets to love down against the Queenslander, Tomic must now recover quickly to take on Richard Gasquet.

That task is made tougher with Tomic cramping in the late stages of the match against Hewitt on Thursday morning. Fatigue usually leads to more of it in the next round so it is vital Tomic rehydrated over the last two days.

It will be interesting to see how much energy he has against Gasquet today.

The Frenchman is into the third round of the US Open for the fourth straight year after defeating Robin Haase in four sets.

In the opening round, as shown plenty of times in the media, he won after Thanasi Kokkinakis retired with a cramp. Before then though, he struggled, as Kokkinakis held a two-sets-to-one lead.

Gasquet hasn’t been in the form that saw him make the semi-finals of the recent Wimbledon event. In his last match, he made over 40 unforced errors, as Haase battled strongly against the 12th seed.

Tomic can do the same against Gasquet and showed this at Wimbledon in 2013 when he defeated him in four sets. His serving was brilliant that day and he landed 81 per cent of his first serves. He also hit 19 aces.

If he is any chance of beating Gasquet today, he needs to serve well, and win plenty of free points. If he doesn’t then Gasquet will make it six wins against Tomic out of seven matches.

If both players were 100 per cent fit then Tomic would be a huge chance. Unfortunately, he isn’t, and Gasquet will take full advantage of it.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Tomic retires as well if the conditions become hot.

Prediction – Gasquet to win in three sets.
