Wallabies star Kurtley Beale is reported to be weighing up a massive contract from English rugby club London Wasps, said to be worth $1.35 million per season.
The Daily Mail is reporting Beale has been tabled a two-year, $2.7 million deal, which would make him the best-paid player in the English premiership.
It’s money the ARU are not in a position to offer the gun utility, whose undeniable talent on the field has often been overshadowed by bad behaviour off the pitch.
However, with Beale having played exactly 60 Tests, he could continue to be selected for the Wallabies under new eligibility rules ushered in last year. So the real losers in the event of Beale’s departure for the Old Dart would be his Super Rugby club, the Waratahs.
Wasps coach Dai Young was keeping his powder dry when asked about Beale’s possible recruitment, although appeared to allude to some of the 27-year-old’s previous indiscretions.
“You’ve got to do your own due diligence,” Young told Press Association Sport.
“You certainly don’t want to bring anyone into this environment who’s going to upset the apple cart with the players.
“I certainly don’t want to bring anyone here who won’t maintain the standards of what we expect of Wasps players and staff.
“I take my responsibilities very seriously on that.
“A lot of people make mistakes, and I’m sure me and you have made a few when we were younger.
“Some are more documented than others.
“But I’m confident anybody I bring into this environment I’ve done my homework on.
“What they’ve done in the past is the past.
“But I’m confident that any player who is in this environment will not reflect poorly on Wasps.”
As for whether or not Beale will take the money and run, British rugby reporter Neil Fissler is saying it’s already a done deal.
