With today’s announcement of a stand alone Australian netball competition, Australian fans bid farewell to the Steel, Pulse, Tactix, Mystics and Magic and welcome three new Australian teams.

Will Australian fans miss the New Zealand teams? The answer has to be yes. Over the nine seasons we have been watching the New Zealand teams play in the competition they have been overall weaker than the Australian teams, with only the Magic taking out the championship once in 2009.

The New Zealand teams bring enthusiasm and some very talented girls to play every week in Australia.

Something Australian fans may take for granted now but will have to wait for the international games and tournaments to watch in the future. That is of course depending on how New Zealand choose to structure their own competition.

Also released in today’s announcement comes the news that AFL teams Collingwood and Greater Western Sydney along with NRL team Melbourne Storm have been the successful bidders for the additional three teams that will be based in Melbourne, Sydney and the Sunshine Coast.

These are the wealthy sporting clubs with well established training facilities and sports science departments.

These three teams will also be entering the competition to win and while how the existing teams use their share of the new TV deal there is no denying these teams will use those facilities to pursue the top talent to become the new powerhouses of the competition.

However four games a week on free-to-air TV, an increase in TV revenue and three additional teams meaning more Australian girls playing top level netball it’s no surprise Netball Australia started the new competition.

But will it be a success? Only time will tell.
