Aussie tennis’ great enigma Bernard Tomic begins his French Open campaign against American Brian Baker. Join The Roar for live scores from 7pm (AEST).

It’s been a controversial past few weeks for Tomic. The clay court season has seen the Australian produce some lethargic performances that raise great concern about his ability to fulfil his potential.

After another competitive, fourth-round showing at the Australian Open, Tomic has underperformed again on the European clay, and he may be targeting the French Open has mere preparation for a stronger showing in Wimbledon.

With that said, Tomic starts a strong favourite against American journeyman Baker. The pair have only met once on the ATP tour, with Tomic winning easily 6-4, 6-3 back in 2012.

However Baker is a solid competitor and will fancy his chances of causing the upset if Tomic replicates the poor attitude prevalent in his recent defeats.

The Australian at his best should secure the win in straight sets, particularly if he unleashes off the backhand and forehand side. Tomic certainly possesses the power to pin opponents behind the baseline, but he too often finds himself playing in a rhythm that keeps opponents alive in rallies.

It is an attitude that has cost him big time against seasoned professionals like Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic. Unlike Nick Kyrgios, who already has wins over Nadal and Federer in major tournaments, Tomic has not looked like securing a win against the big four because of his inability to produce power with his shot-making when it counts.

If he can get in the habit of doing so against Baker, he may just set himself up nicely for a charge at the French Open. Anything less and more disappointment could follow for the Australian.
