Andy Murray will be hoping for an easier encounter when he squares off against Mathias Bourgue in the second round of the French Open. Join The Roar for live scores from around 10pm (AEST).
Murray didn’t come to play in the first-round and was jumped by Radek Stepanek early, falling behind two sets to love before a delay in the match due to the weather in Paris allowed him to realise the severity of the situation and get himself into gear.
From that point on it still wasn’t a walk in the park – Stepanek was persistent all the way to the end, however the number two seed was able to unconvincingly get the job done.
He’ll now move beyond that game and wipe it from his memory as he sets his sights on Mathias Bourgue.
The 22-year-old Bourgue is ranked 164th in the world and unlike Murray, he got through his first round match-up in straight sets. While it wasn’t an easy game he didn’t spend nearly the amount of time on the court Murray had to, which could come back to haunt the world number 2 later in the tournament.
This is the first meeting between these two and while on paper it seems like a one-sided affair, you can never take anything for granted on the grand slam stage and with fresher legs, anything is possible for Bourgue.
Prediction
Andy Murray to bounce back in clinical fashion and show why he is the number two seed – unfortunately for Bourgue he’s going to be the deer caught in the headlights.
Murray in straight sets (6-2, 6-2, 6-4)
