She originally crossed the line in first place but Australia’s Jess Fox was given a two-second penalty in the K1 canoe slalom final.

Fox was elated when the scoreboard showed she was leading the competition but the announcement of a review of her run made for a nervous wait.

Officials ruled that Fox had touched a gate during the run and pushed her time from 100.49 to 102.49.

As it turned out her original time would not have been good enough for gold in any event with Spain’s Maialen Chourraut completing the course in 98.65.

After the event Fox admitted that officials made the right call and was happy with the bronze medal following on from her silver at the 2012 London Olympics.

“I didn’t feel it (touching the gate) because it’s on my back but that is what the video judges look at and it’s a fair call,” Fox told the ABC.

“I think finishing that run I was thrilled to put down a run, it wasn’t perfect but it went into the lead and that was fantastic,” she said.

“And then obviously the asterisk came up and a late penalty was added and my heart sank because I didn’t know if that would be good enough for a podium.”

The 22-year-old knows that she has potentially at least another two Olympics to look forward to.

“I’m more motivated than ever, I’m the fittest I’ve been and I was the paddling the best I’ve ever been paddling.”

Meanwhile Australia won a silver medal in the men’s quadruple sculls.

The team had to wait an extra day for the final after rough conditions forced a postponement on day five.

The team of James McRae, Cameron Girdlestone, Alexander Belonogoff and Karsten Forsterling had a solid run to finish behind Germany.

The Australian men’s four also has a chance to medal after making it into the final.
