With its history stretching back as far as 776 BC in Olympia, Greece, the Olympic Games is the oldest sporting tournament in the world. The Modern Olympic games were founded in 1895 by Greek Philanthropist Evangelis Zappas. The International Olympic committee (IOC) was established a year earlier. A multi-sport event, the Olympic games feature most summer and winter sports which are contested by most nations on the planet. The Olympic motto is “Citius, Altius, Fortius” which means “Faster, Higher, Stronger.” The Olympics usually attract billions of viewers around the world. The most recent Olympics were held in Beijing in 2008 and were best remembered for American swimmer Michael Phelp’s world record breaking heroics in the pool. The next Olympics will be held in London in 2012.
