Australia finally gained an eighth gold medal on the 14th day at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games after Chloe Esposito recorded an incredible victory in the modern pentathlon.

That equals our effort at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and leaves us with two more days left of Olympic action in which we can look to better than total.

So what are our best chances on Day 15?

Minjee Lee and Su Oh are in the women’s golf which wraps up today, but both are some distance off being in contention for a medal.

Australia has entrants in two canoeing events – Stephen Bird in the men’s kayak single 200m, and a team in the men’s kayak four 1000m.

We’ve also got Emma Moffatt going into the women’s triathlon, which kicks off at midnight (AEST).

Rebecca Henderson will appear in the women’s cross-country mountain-biking event.

And at the scene of some of our best successes – the pool – Domonic Bedggood will compete in the men’s 10m platform diving final at 5:30am (AEST).

After that it’s all about the athletics.

Ryan Gregson is competing in the men’s 1500m final, that begins at 10am (AEST).

Brett Robinson is in the field for the men’s 500m final, that one starting at 10:30am (AEST).

And lastly Australia’s team has made it through to the final of the women’s 4x400m relay, which begins at 11am (AEST).

The day might not be littered with athletes at the head of their respective events, but one never knows from where the Aussies might be able to stage a surprise upset victory.

A ninth gold medal would be a great way to cap off our time at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, and despite some hardship along the way, give us the feeling that we at least improved on London.

All things considered really, we’ll just be happy so long as no one else gets locked up for trying to sneak into the basketball!
