Mitchell requested a trade to the Hawks earlier in the week, after months of speculation that he would leave Sydney at the end of the year.

It’s believed that the contract offer he has agreed to with the Hawks is significantly better than what Sydney were offering him.

“We are excited to have an in principle deal done with the Sydney Swans for Tom Mitchell to join the Hawks for the 2017 season and beyond,” said Hawthorn list manager Graham Wright.

“Tom has had a fantastic season for the Swans, particularly in the second half of the year.

“He’s a high quality person and at only 23 years of age has plenty of football ahead of him.

“Tom has the flexibility to play multiple positions but we believe he’ll primarily play as an inside midfielder.

“We’d also like to thank the Sydney Swans for their professional approach to getting this deal done.”

Sydney, while disappointed at Mitchell’s decision to leave the club, said they were glad to get a deal done and receive another first-round draft pick.

“We’re pleased to have reached agreement with Hawthorn and this deal will enable us to get some terrific young talent through the door,” said Sydney’s football manager, Tom Harley.

“Although we are disappointed that Tom has chosen to leave, once he made his intentions clear we were determined to achieve a fair trade for him.

“We would like to thank Tom for his contribution to our football club and wish him well for the future.”

On the face of it, a pick in the teens seems a very cheap price for a young midfielder of Mitchell’s quality.

However, the pick swaps to be confirmed later next week will certainly swing this one back in Sydney’s favour at least to some degree.
