Australia are widely predicted to get the win in a match that could prove crucial to determining the make-up of the final, to be played next week.

Should England find some path to victory here they’ll give themselves a big chance to make the final ahead of either Australia or New Zealand, depending on how the maths pans out.

However should Australia be victorious then an all-Antipodean final against the Kiwis is a sure thing, so long as New Zealand don’t cough up what would be an incredibly shocking loss to Scotland.

While the match is nation against nation, it’s also a battle of two men in particular – Mal Meninga and Wayne Bennett, the coaches at the helms of the opposing sides.

A win for Bennett would be simply enormous after he was overlooked for the Australian coaching job and instead agreed to coach the English team, but it just doesn’t seem likely to come.

For Meninga, on the other hand, getting the win here and then in the final to follow should confirm his position as the Australian national coach for the forseeable future.

It’s sure to be a dramatic outcome either way at London Stadium.
