The Kings were leading the table until they travelled west on Thursday for the first leg of this double header between the top teams in the competition so far.
They were brutally outplayed though by an undermanned Wildcats, who always seem to find a way to lift at home and in big games.
No Damian Martin was always going to leave Perth challenged on the defensive end, but no one expected the display Sydney put on at that end of the court.
Simply put, they couldn’t get a stop as Perth shot nearly 70 per cent for the first half, and despite a man of the match 34 point display from Kings veteran forward Brad Newley, it wasn’t enough to get them over the line as they eventually went down by 13.
For the Wildcats, it was all Casey Prather and at this point in the season he must be the front runner for the MVP. His new aggressive style is almost unstoppable, and he had no problems sparking the Wildcats offence into gear.
Prather was joined by Matty Knight and Jarrod Kenny in a big way, while youngster Mason Bragg also did plenty on offence.
For the Kings, it’s not the first time their offence has struggled this season, after they were restricted strongly by the Cairns Taipans a fortnight ago, and with little impact from Josh Powell and Steve Blake, their positions as imports in the side might start to come into question.
Sydney must get more players on court who can improve the plight of Kevin Lisch and Newley, who were the only players looking like doing something good on Thursday.
With Perth carrying the momentum, they could move further ahead at the top of the table with a win here, while the Kings are at risk of plunging back towards the pack, putting plenty of pressure on them.
Prediction
I backed the Kings on Thursday Night, and I’m willing to do it again back on their home floor here. It was close to their worst performance of the season, and with so much on the line and no Damian Martin, they should get the job done in a close one.
Kings by 3.
