Cristiano Ronaldo has called his five-match ban for pushing a referee “exaggerated and ridiculous” and claims he is being persecuted after failing to have the sanction overturned on appeal.

During Sunday night’s Spanish Super Cup 3-1 first-leg victory over Barcelona, in which he had scored, Real Madrid forward Ronaldo reacted badly after being shown a second yellow for diving by match official Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, shoving the Spaniard in the back.

A Spanish football federation committee has dismissed an appeal, meaning Ronaldo will miss La Liga games against Deportivo La Coruna, Valenica, Levante and Real Sociedad as well as the return clash against Barcelona.

Ronaldo reacted angrily on social media, writing in an Instagram post on his official page: “It’s impossible to stay quiet in this situation, five matches!

“To me it seems exaggerated and ridiculous, this is what you call persecution!

“Thanks to my team-mates and to the fans for the support.”

Ronaldo was found guilty of ‘Violation of article 96 of the Disciplinary Code’, which relates to using “mild force” against the officials, including grabbing, pushing or shaking.

Real boss Zinedine Zidane believed the ban was disproportionate.

“I am and we are very upset,” he told the club’s official website on Tuesday.

“I’m not going to get involved with the referees but, after what happened, to think that he’ll not play for five games makes you think that something isn’t right.

    “It’s too long for him.

“I have been very clear in my response. What happened, happened, but when you look at the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo has got five matches, you have to admit that it is a lot.”

Former Manchester United forward Ronaldo has been linked with a move away from Real this summer after revealing his frustration over an investigation into his tax returns in Spain. He denies the charges.

I’m one of your biggest fans, Cristiano, but you were way out of line.

I’ll turn a blind eye to all the other nonsense you do on the pitch: taking your shirt off, the occasional dive, pouting, going missing for periods when your team needs you the most, selfishly taking shots when the cut back to a team mate for a tap in available…

I turn a blind eye because I saw you playing your 1st game for Man United as a gangly, pimple faced teenager & knew you were special.

But… you simply can never touch the ref. It’s not negotiable. You don’t do it.

Yeah, shame to see this response from the current Balloon d’Or winner and highest profile sportsman on the planet. Really had to set an example: apologise and state that there is NO EXCUSE for touching the refs.

I’m sure that when Cristiano reads this he will see that he has made a mistake, and thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to give him this much needed advice.

Pointy end of the most prestigious AFL tournament on the planet; plus the Grand Final of the AFL World Cup being played on parks where dogs regularly defecate … but the groupies prefer to be reading & talking real football.

Let’s perhaps engage in just a little self-reflection before throwing around words like “groupie”, shall we?

It’s massive in Melbourne at the moment. World class carnival atmosphere similar to all world class sporting events.

The ban is right. There is a lack of respect towards referees in general. I hate players ganging up on referees, bullying and shouting at them, let alone touching them. Just respect the decision. Bad referee decisions have never changed the outcome of a league title or a player’s career and the amount of money he earned. Bad decisions have changed the outcome of a few single games, that’s insignificant. And over time they even out anyway.

I hear Messi has a good accountant. Perhaps he should give them a ring.

Messi was sentenced to 21 months of jail. But in Spain any jail sentence below 2 years is automatically suspended for 1st time offenders.
