Love sport, hate bullshit

Me too, I don’t buy the Daily Telegraph or subscribe to Foxtel.

All this criticism has actually been a good thing and strengthened the game.
I’m feeling more positive about the A-League than I ever have and looking forward to caching up on a few more games with my kids.

I’ve also just put in my on-line registration with my football club with my early bird discount, for another year running around with the boys.

Its all good and only gets better from here on in.

Happy New Year to the A-League's persistent critics!

Great idea Ian.

The FFA are on to it. Although a couple of games a year is not enough, should be expanded.

Ref sorry for wrong penalty decisions

The AFL have a right to protect their investments and they are well positioned to do it with over 100 professionals in their media department and a foothold in the general media and every level of government.

I’m sure every judge in Melbourne is probably an ex-player or ex-official and has no problem doing favours.

I’m surprised at the level of surprise and indignation that the AFL would behave like this. 🙂

Meddling AFL only make things worse, again

The second wave of young Aussie professionals landing in Europe is betting bigger and stronger.

Degenek's Socceroos ambitions growing in Munich

I have no regard for any of these characters either Fuss.

The amount of time they spend on the football tab bagging football is astounding.
Really puzzling.

Leicester City’s EPL credentials getting hard to dismiss

Foxtel ratings are on the slide for everything, no surprise.
The bigger surprise is that the A-League ratings are higher than last season’s derby, which is pretty good.

There are a lot more ways to watch sport and entertainment these days, cheaper, more targeted and easier to connect to.

Derby win proves City's legitimacy

What a great competition we have. It may not be the best in the world but I love it.

Great to watch Victory lose four in a row and the competition open right up.
Who would have thought by Christmas it would be Wanders One, Melb City Two.

Sydney FC will be doing very well just to stay in the top four.

Wanderers v Sydney FC grand final would be massive!!

HIGHLIGHTS: City the A-League's new kings of Melbourne

Sorensen the new Covic, old fellas are doing alright.

HIGHLIGHTS: City the A-League's new kings of Melbourne

On Current form shouldn’t that be Melbourne City representing Melbourne?

A-League clubs under spotlight over unpaid players

Settle down Waz, don’t be too negative or you’ll blow your cover.

If you are going to remove profits from selling players from A-League clubs income, then we might as well remove the expenses of buying players as “extraordinary expenses” while we’re at it.

What a huge profit A-League clubs are making!

A-League clubs under spotlight over unpaid players

Under Arnold, Sydney are notoriously slow out of the blocks and fast finishers.

Good chance Arnold will get them to the GF again and it would have to be played at the Olympic Stadium, especially if the FFA are picking the venue.

I know Popovic would like the GF played at Pirtek, but no chance of that.

The Spaniards have added an air of calm at Wanderland

The hype’s been there since their first game in the A-League.

A great example of how a team should be put together and managed.

Even when they were running last, they had a memberships waiting list of nearly 3,000.

The Spaniards have added an air of calm at Wanderland

What about the manager, he isn’t Spanish. He’s the calming influence too and has learnt a lot from last year’s bad season, which good managers do.

Great credit to Poppa for what he has a achieved with this team and can do.
A ready replacement for Postecoglou if his wheels fall off.

I hope it’s finally a Sydney FC v Wanderers Toilet Seat Grand Final.
We will rock ANZ stadium.

Who says kids do what their parents tell them.

The kids (and their mates) decide which sport they play, not their mums.

Kids love football and so do a lot of their friends. That’s why it is the most popular game in the world, not because their mum’s force them play it.

Grow up.

What can we do to get more fans to A-League games?

What sort of statement is that.

All surveys are based on predicting behaviour from sampling.

All ratings are just estimates from sampling. They don’t knock on everybody in the world’s door and sit down with them and record what they watch.

Biggest difference is OzTAM select their sample and only sample people at home, so the results are heavily biased against the people who do not watch much commercial TV or watch sport outside of their house. OzTAM is owned by the commercial TV stations.

Roy Morgan research is independently owned and run, so they include other venues and viewing habits, not just homes, like pubs, clubs etc., so it is less biased.

Use the stats to your own advantage.

What can we do to get more fans to A-League games?

Ticket prices have gone up about 20% in Sydney this season for similar seats as last season and is definitely impacting decisions to go to the game, especially groups and families.

They have taken away group discounts and family tickets for the more popular games too.

What can we do to get more fans to A-League games?

Foxtel determine the playing schedule, not the FFA and they want all games live.

That’s why we have games played in Perth and Cairns in nearly 40’C heatwave conditions.

What can we do to get more fans to A-League games?

The FFA have limited funds an are only part of the problem.

The A-League clubs are supposed to spend time and money promoting their club locally as well.

To be fair, football clubs and the FFA don’t have as much money to spend on marketing.

The AFL and NRL Marketing and Media departments alone employ more people than the whole workforce of the FFA and A-League clubs combined.

What can we do to get more fans to A-League games?

Wow.
Bring on the Vic derby.

Victory missing Milligan and Valeri in the screening defensive role and attacking holes appearing.
Time for Muscat to pull on the boots.

There are a number of promotions that you can do that cost very little cash:
– give A-League game family passes to anyone who registers to play in any FFA competition, about 2 million registered players
– supply family passes to radio stations, TV stations, McDonalds, KFC etc to give away as part of their summer promotions
– get A-League players on TV shows like masterchef, bachelor/bachelorette, big brother, I’m a celebrity, get me out of here, etc.
– get A-League coaches/players to write weekly columns in their local papers
– get football and the A-League prioritised in online search engines
– get all football players and coaches set up on linkedin, twitter, facebook google plus etc.
– pay for membership to get listed on websites of local business directories,
– network with local branches of Rotary, Lions club etc
– perform good deeds for local hospitals and charities, community groups and get it in the local papers
– offer free coaching by players and staff at local schools as part of the PE classes etc
– do crazy or unusual things and events, Guiness Book of Records attempts etc and invite the kids and the local press
– players/coaches write articles on the roar
– hire local strippers for home games
– Put ticket prices back to what they were last season and advertise the HUGE DISCOUNTS
– Hire Rebecca Wilson as your PR Manager
– Find out what federal, state, and local government programs are in existence to help your club grow business. Most offer free advice and support and put you in touch with government agencies and large corporations that are looking for promotions and leads
– letter drops, flyers
– run competitions with season pass prizes and giveaways
– buy pay per click advertising on online media

and so on . . .

What are the A-League clubs’ PR/Marketing people doing?

The clubs should be chasing their local fans, it’s not just about national FFA shotgun marketing, which is very expensive.

What can we do to get more fans to A-League games?

There’s a football club called FC Cafe’ Opera and an opera called “Opera for Sunderland” so you can be a football and opera fan at the same time . . . and loving it!

What can we do to get more fans to A-League games?

” . . . you’re the same person at both games . . . ”

Very existential comment Dean.

Do you realise one of the fathers of existentialism, Albert Camus was the goalkeeper for the Algerian national football team?

He once famously said: “All that I know most surely about morality and obligations I owe to football.”

I wonder if Rebecca or Mike ever read Camus.

What can we do to get more fans to A-League games?

3 games in 7 days, a good test for the champions.
If they come through it top of the table after 2 wins then they would certainly get that favourites tag back.

Popovic outsmarts Muscat to move into A-League favouritism

Not sure about “incessant fouling”, maybe some players fell over too easily, given what was at stake.

Can’t please everyone, other bloggers here felt that the referee “had it in for the Wanderers”.
Happens after every game now.

Popovic outsmarts Muscat to move into A-League favouritism

As expected City beat the Jets and move up to third ahead of Sydney and Victory.

If Victory can’t beat Perth, City will go into the Melb Derby as favourites and a good chance to get a derby win.
Aren’t Mooy and Fornaroli in great form.
