The only reason we even have an IC is that News left the game early as leverage to obtain F & L rights all the way to 2027.

That meant the status quo of Nine/Fox most likely winning the rights in 2012, 2017, and 2022, freezing out Ten/Seven. Very bad indeed.

Nine/Fox having F & L rights are THE REASON they won the rights this time.

The ARLC have been able to negotiate complete freedom for all future broadcast deals, this is absolutely huge for the game, immeasurable.

And they got us around $1.3 billion, all up.

I’m very happy with deal, it sets up all future deals perfectly.

Breaking: NRL TV rights stay with Nine, Fox Sports in $1 billion deal

And NRL expansion to do as well…

IN a week where sport was X-rayed and the oddest things discovered, one condition needs no further research. The dominance of rugby league in Queensland and NSW grows and does not stutter under the splurge of AFL money and marketing.
The third State of Origin match, a one-point body wrestle of violent sport, confirmed that rugby league possesses a hold over the nation that will only grow and not diminish. The three-match series is Australia’s premier sporting event. Bigger than the Melbourne Cup, even bigger than the Ashes.

The AFL’s investment in second teams in Queensland and NSW will now clearly draw more than the budgeted money. More than $200 million will not get the AFL to half-time in the fight to secure the Gold Coast Suns and Greater Western Sydney Giants. The AFL’s privately acknowledged war chest of $400m will be drained to the last cent.

Expansion to stay, despite tribalism

Every Sydney NRL team gets better ratings than the Swans in Sydney.

I would suggest the same will happen to the Storm in Melbourne when they are put on decent hours there.

Why the hoopla? Expansion is limited

That IC proposal you’ve quoted from the SMH has been changed a few times since then. The latest version, the one they are writting into the constition as we speak, gives the clubs no power in voting for commissioners.

“Under the proposal they have agreed to, the 16 clubs, the NSWRL and the QRL would each have one of 18 votes – although they would only be able to remove commissioners, not appoint them. Instead, the eight commissioners would decide on the replacements for any departing colleagues.”

League's Commission not so independent

From what i’ve read, the constitution that has been agreed upon has…

…the inaugural commissioners are voted in by News Ltd and the ARL (they vote in 4 each and they both have to agree with all nominations).

In future, all commissioners will be voted in by the existing commissioners only. The clubs get NO say in who the inaugural or future commissioners will be, which i think most people will agree is a great thing.

Centrebets odds for 2011 premership.

1. St George.
2. Brisbane.
3. STORM.

Alan, Centrebet think you’re not too far out.

Excluding the very top fullbacks no outside back is currently worth $450K in RL – apart from the super freak that is Greg Inglis.

Folau exit means need for cap review, not mass panic

He’s an islander from Western Sydney giving his opinion on the AFL’s chances of getting Islanders from Western Sydney to convert to AFL.

He’s also a very good player.

Jennings questions AFL's western impact

I guess the ability of rugby league to avoid all criticism from the communities of the other codes is what makes it stand out as the best sport in the country?

Jennings questions AFL's western impact

The off field dramas for the NRL in 2009 were terribly damaging for the game. When the players are named, Greg Inglis, Brett Stewart, Matty Johns, the media camp outside their house and their faces are in print and on the TV constantly.

I realise AFL players who test positive for drugs are not named as the AFL refuses to name them but how does the AFL keep these St Kilda guys names away from the media circus that would surely follow?

Does anyone know how they have done it?

St Kilda sex scandal a lesson for all footballers

Will the NRL ever be truely national?

Logic dictates these things should happen:

NRL independent commission up and running late 2010.
NRL signs most lucrative TV deal starting in 2013.
Melbourne Storm games shown prime time FTA in Melbourne from 2013.
NRL expands to Perth and Central Coast in 2014-2015.

Will the NRL ever be truly national?
