Giggs screamer saves Man United’s blushes [video]

Ryan GiggsA brilliant goal from veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs has rescued Manchester United as the English club snatched a 1-1 draw with Benefica in the Champions League.

In a busy morning of European action Real Madrid notched a 1-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb, Bayer Munich defeated Villareal 2-0, Manchester City was held 1-1 by Napoli and Trabzonspor upset Inter Milan 1-0.

It was Giggs who was the hero once again for the English club, who were on the back foot for most of the game.

Manchester United went behind on the 24th minute after Oscar Cardozo’s neat goal. The Paraguyan spun past defender Jonny Evans and rifled a shot past debutatant goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard, who had replaced David De Gea.

It was just desserts for Benefica who had showed their attacking intent from the opening whistle. It was a second-string team facing the Portugese giants, but it still featured the likes of Giggs and Wayne Rooney.

And it was the 37-year old Welshman who came to the rescue with his 27th goal in the Champions League. Giggs cut inside from the right on the 42nd minute and with his accomplished left boot smashed a fine strike into the top corner.

Lindegaard saved United several times throughout the game with some first-class saves, as the English champions held on for the draw.

In other Champions League results, there was 0-0 and 2-2 draws between Ajax and Lyon, and CSKA Moscow and Lille, respectively. Swiss side Basel defeated Romanian club Otelul Galati 2-1.
