Hitman Hatton strikes

Ricky Hatton’s body shot on Jose Luis Castillo was brutal. A left hook to Castillo’s side left him breathless and unable to carry on. Perfect for highlight reels, the footage of Castillo’s dramatic concession of defeat will have made its way all over the US air waves carrying Hatton’s name and fame with it.

Hatton’s undefeated rise, including the scalp of Kostya Tszyu in 2005, now presents Floyd Mayweather with a problem. Mayweather, arguably the world’s best pound-for-pound boxer, has been in a hazy Michael Jordan type retirement since unconvincingly defeating Oscar De La Hoya in May. A rematch with De La Hoya is potentially still on the cards and would offer both fighters another lucrative purse. However, after Hatton’s commanding performance, accepting De La Hoya’s challenge and not the Briton’s will leave a question mark on Mayweather’s legacy.

Mayweather spent most of his last bout trying to avoid De La Hoya however Hatton’s constant holding might make such tactics difficult to follow. At 28 and in the prime of his career Hatton probably won’t get the opportunity to test himself against Mayweather and boxing is poorer for it. Hopefully Hatton will get a chance with De La Hoya in what would be an amazing contest.
