South Korea and North Korea drew 0-0 on Wednesday in their politically charged World Cup qualifying match at a neutral venue at Hongkou Stadium.

The game was moved from North Korea to Shanghai after North Korea officials refused to have the South Korea anthem played and the South’s flag flown on their turf.

The result moved both teams to four points from two games, equal top of qualifying Group C, with the top two teams to progress to the next stage.

The neutral venue provided an incident free match with South Korean fans outnumbering the North Koreas by 10 to 1.

The first half in their Group C match was fast paced with both teams attempting to counterattack, but there were no clear scoring chances. South Korea continually looked to Manchester United’s Park Ji-sung with North Korea trying to find lone striker Jong Tae Se.

South Korea had the most possession in the second half without creating a clear scoring opportunity.

The teams had now played 11 and North Korea had won only one back in 1990. South Korea had won their only two previous meetings in World Cup qualifiers.

The two countries are technically still at war although fighting on the battlefield ended in 1953.

The pre-game anthems were played without incident. As the South Korea anthem was played, thousands of its fans behind one goal unfurled two huge flags – 20m by 20m.
