Canberra maintained touch with the NRL’s top eight with an emphatic 38-10 win over South Sydney at Canberra Stadium last night.

Centre Joel Monaghan scored a double but it was the Raiders’ forwards who laid the platform for the win.

Prop Scott Logan led the way, proving a handful for the Rabbitohs’ defence, while Trevor Thurling and Glen Turner both scored tries as the home side raced to a 24-4 halftime lead.

Their performance allowed halves Todd Carney and Terry Campese to dart in and amongst the Souths line with the pair continually kicking to winger Shannon Hegarty, who was put under pressure all night in the cold conditions.

Monaghan showed his finishing brilliance, scoring two tries including the first of the match off a Carney kick in just the 55th second of the match.

The result puts Canberra two points outside the top eight but leaves the Rabbitohs anchored to the bottom of the table with just one win this season.

Poor defence marred South Sydney’s performance and, combined with a lack of imagination in attack, were never in the game.

Five-eighth Dean Widders could have a case to answer after he was penalised for a head slam on Raiders skipper Alan Tongue in the 68th minute.

After the match Raiders CEO Don Furner said he was concerned by two alleged “chicken wing” tackles in the first half.

Furner was bothered by a Roy Asotasi tackle on Glen Turner and a second tackle on Dane Tilse by a defender he did not name.

Neither tackler was placed on report by referee Gavin Badger but Furner said TV replays highlighted the tactic.

“I thought it was pretty clear,” Furner said.

“I’m sure (coach) Neil (Henry) will look at it.”

Henry was less committal, saying it was a matter for the weekly match review process.

Tongue praised his young halfback.

“Toddy’s kicking game was outstanding,” Tongue said.

“We started well (and) put a lot of pressure on them early.”

Henry said he was well pleased with the performance of his forwards.

“We started on the right foot. We need a bit of momentum (going into the bye).”

Taylor defended his team, saying the loss was the result of a statistics.

“It was just weight of possession,” Taylor said.

“In the end the score board ticked over.”

Skipper Roy Asotasi was more frank.

“It just seems like we come out there and don’t want to win. Canberra came out there and wanted to win this game.”
