Australia thrashed Iran 97-53 in round two of the World Challenge Series at Distinctive Home Dome tonight.

CJ Bruton was the first to put a mark on the scoreboard with an impressive three-point basket for the Boomers, before going on to score 15 points.

Iran started the game on shaky ground, when Hamed Ehadadi missed two easy opportunities and a free throw.

The 217cm giant redeemed himself in the second quarter somewhat, barely lifting his feet from the ground to score two slams.

By the end of the first quarter Australia led 20-7.

Not as tall as some of his opponents and teammates but equally as quick on his feet, Boomer Patrick Mills worked the court all night and was rewarded with a 17 point haul.

When Bruton hit his third three-pointer late in the second period, Australia romped into the main break up by 50-20.

The FIBA Asian champions tried hard to cut down their error rate in the second half but the Australian onslaught continued unabated in the third period, amassing a 76-31 lead.

The final quarter belonged to Iran, who scored 22 points to Australia’s 21 but it counted for little in the end.

Disappointed by the deficit, Iran coach Rajko Toroman said he expected the series to be a learning curve for his players, many of whom had never played in a foreign country.
“We played the worst game we’ve played since I’ve been coach of the national team,” he said.

Australian coach Brian Goorjian said his players forced the opposition into errors.

“The perimeter guys were playing real well off the dribble,” he said.

“We want to make sure we put a team out that Australia is going to be proud of and … tonight I couldn’t fault their heart and effort.”

Mills said he was pleased with the way his teammates supported each other on the court.

“Everyone that went on the court played those minutes hard and the result showed that,” he said.
