America's Cup organisers end contract with Valencia

The venue for the 33rd America’s Cup, originally planned for Valencia, was in doubt after the organisers AC Management (ACM) ended their contract with the Spanish city today.

The event has been on hold since a legal battle broke out between Swiss holders Alinghi and challenger BMW Oracle over how, when and where the prestigious race should be held.

“As a consequence of the continued uncertainty around the event…CM and the local government bodies have been left with no option but to revise the terms of their relationship ending the contract signed in July 2007 that named Valencia the Host City for a multi-challenge 33rd America’s Cup in 2009,” ACM said in a statement.

The running of the port facilities, from where the 32nd America’s Cup was held in 2007, will pass over to the local authorities.

The CEO of ACM Michel Hodra, who is tasked with organising the next race on behalf of Alinghi, said the legal battle meant too many issues such as the date and participants remained unresolved and that the contract with Valencia was no longer appropriate.

“This does not mean that we are leaving Valencia,” he said.

“The choice of the venue for the 33rd America’s Cup will mainly be based on competitive factors and if Valencia is considered the best place, then a second America’s Cup Match will take place here.”

The US-Based BMW Oracle team mounted a successful legal challenge to Alinghi’s proposals for the next race, saying that the way it had been set up gave the holders an unfair advantage.
