Rejuvenated allrounder Shane Watson has described the captaincy of Michael Clarke as “brilliant” and praised the stand-in skipper for his composure in the Caribbean.

In Ricky Ponting’s injury-enforced absence, Clarke led the national team to victory in their final two one-day matches in the West Indies as Australia completed a 5-0 series triumph.

“He was amazing, he is a very natural leader,” Watson said.

“He did an amazing job in the last two games, especially in the tight one, we came back from the dead really to win.

“He was very cool under pressure.”

It is heady praise as Watson played under noted leader Shane Warne during Rajasthan’s run to the inaugural Indian Premier League title in May.

Watson has enjoyed a wildly successful couple of months after starring for the Royals before making his mark for Australia in the one-day series against the West Indies.

He finished fourth in both the IPL batting and bowling aggregates and topped Australia’s run scorers in the West Indies.

“It’s been a pretty interesting sort of last year and to be here now and be part of a winning team and play a good role in it as well is something I wasn’t expecting at all,” Watson said at Sydney Airport today.

“I was expecting to be in England playing county cricket, so to be part of this is definitely an amazing feeling.”

Watson credited the IPL for boosting his form and confidence heading in to the one-day series against the West Indies.

“It was great to be able to put my skills up against some of the best cricketers in the world, physically we played a lot of cricket in six weeks,” Watson said.
