Essendon bomb helpless Magpies

It’s arguably the best feeling alive: having a smile, a laugh, and the fact that my English teacher will cop it on Monday. And all this at the Magpies expense.

At approximately 4:50pm it became official that the Essendon football club had defeated arch enemy the Magpies. At the same time the party started.

Although having an injury list longer than Conrod Straight, the Bombers showed no limp the other day, with their midfielders leading from the front, giving the Bombers their fifth win in six matches and reopening the door for a possible finals appearance.

Andrew Welsh continued a fine run of form, slotting through four majors, along with skipper Matthew Lloyd, which gave the Bombers ample options up forward and Collingwood plenty of headaches.

Question marks over the careers of Damien Peverill and Mal Michael were pushed aside as both solidly held their respected positions and showed signs of regaining some much needed form.

David Hille further placed his claim for All-Australian selection with yet another telling display in the ruck and around the ground.

For the Magpies, if they really are a finals contender, they will bounce back from this.

Harry O’Brien showed plenty of dash from the back line, but apart from that, and some occasional individual positives, there wasn’t much to take away from this game except for a real wake-up call.

Although so close, September action is still so far away for the Bombers.

The following two weeks (Melbourne and West Coast) hold the key to the Bombers making the eight.

But for the moment even next week is too far away. Let’s just rejoice as the mighty Bombers have beaten the Maggies!
