South Sydney chief executive Shane Richardson has reassured Rabbitohs supporters the NRL club has no intention of relocating from their Sydney base.
With Sonny Bill Williams’ shock departure from the Bulldogs re-igniting the debate over whether nine Sydney teams can survive in what is touted as a national competition, Richardson has told Souths’ members the club could survive any cull.
“The facts are that if similar criteria existed today as those that saw us ejected from the NRL competition (at the end of 1999), we would actually be on top of the list, rather than at the bottom, as we were then,” Richardson wrote.
“We have no intentions of moving from our Sydney base.”
Richardson’s declaration comes just months after former CEO and co-owner Peter Holmes a Court said he could not guarantee the Rabbitohs’ survival in South Sydney.
It also follows Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg’s claim this week than any Sydney club would be silly not to explore relocating to the NSW Central Coast with the NRL offering an $11 million carrot.
