Australian Aaron Baddeley shot a battling one-over-par 71 to remain on the edge of contention after the third round at the US PGA Championship today.

Baddeley, who completed just one hole yesterday before bad weather halted play for the day, was up before 5am for the resumption, but his early wake-up call was not a complete waste of time as he recorded two birdies and three bogeys on an unusually nippy morning at Oakland Hills.

He was equal ninth with one round left, while American Ben Curtis led after carding 68 for a two-under 208 total.

Curtis, the surprise 2003 British Open champion, headed compatriot JB Holmes and Swede Henrik Stenson by one stroke.

Irishman Padraig Harrington, Spaniard Sergio Garcia and Korean Charlie Wi were next, three strokes off the pace.

The leaders had no time to relax, with the final round starting almost immediately after the finish of the third round.

“I think I have to get it back to at least even par to have a chance to win,” said Baddeley, who vowed to attack in the final round.

“I am putting nicely, so if I can just keep driving it well I will probably be a little more aggressive with my irons to give myself some birdie opportunities.

“You could shoot a really good score this afternoon. To shoot a three or six-under you’re going to have to play well, but it’s out there because the greens are softer.

“Everything’s softer because of all the rain yesterday, so you can be more aggressive with your approach shots.”

Baddeley was the only Australian with a realistic chance of challenging for victory, with Stuart Appleby his next best compatriot, seven shots off the pace after a 69.

Steve Elkington was two shots further back after a 73.
